Anton Bauer-Stasis

Hi
Did a search on the site and found very little information regarding using this device (Anton Bauer-Stasis).
http://www.antonbauer.com/stasis.htm
The Rigpro as nice as it may be is very bulky in my opinion (look and operation).
Since i am looking for some device that will give me the feeling of using a shoulder mounted cam in terms of weight and balance and will be quick to fold the Stasis is an option.

Any body with an actual experience with the stasis?

Thanks
Johnnie

Re: Anton Bauer-Stasis

I own a Stasis and--while I think it's a bit overpriced--I think it's a good tool. The weight and balance are indeed similar to a shoulder mounted camera, about 10 lbs (with camera & A/B battery) and slightly front heavy. The way the mount is designed, your hand slips onto the DVX handgrip just as it would slip onto the handgrip for, say, a DSR570--and you have to support the camera with a similar degree of force. Again, it's not perfectly balanced on your shoulder, but it doesn't require much effort to keep the camera in the right position.

The Stasis' parts are high-quality and very well machined--it feels quite solid, yet lightweight. And in about 5 seconds, it folds up into a small pouch that can easily fit in a camera bag.

Another bonus is that you can mount a tripod plate to the forward knuckle of the device, so that the whole rig can go right onto the tripod. You have to remove the A/B battery, though, or it will be terribly back heavy on the sticks. And also because the Stasis' arm is unsupported above the tripod head, it is not as rigid a camera suppport as the tripod head itself.

One other downer is that the Stasis has woefully inadequate padding. There is a dinky piece of foam on the arm that does nothing to protect your shoulder. I bought a fuzzy seatbelt cushion for $9 and wrapped it around the arm to make it more comfortable.

Hope this helps.

Thanks dkphotos.

Just one more question...
Is it a device you would invest your money and buy it again now that you know how it works?

Yes, I would buy it again--but only because I don't know of a better alternative for my needs (documentary). I agree with you that the DVRigpro--while ingenious--is too bulky a contraption for some situations.

The Stasis is by no means perfect, but in terms of portability and simplicity, I think it is the best device of it's kind.
