Anti-Virus

I was wondering if there was a good and free anti-virus downdoad out there for macs, with online updates. If not free, something good that i can invest a little money in. I know the words good and free don't often go well together in a sentence, when it comes to video or much of anything for that matter, but i thought i'd throw it out there. Thanks to anyone that could help out.

Re: Anti-Virus

I wouldn't put anything on. If you're behind a firewall you're pretty safe. There hasn't been a big Mac virus since like '95. "The Auto-Start Worm"

An anti-virus program on an editing workstation may result in dropped-frames too as it "works in the background"

Re: Anti-Virus

A firewall should be sufficient enough as far as anti-virus. There's only a handful of mac viruses out there.

Do not install Norton as it will conflict with Final Cut. It sees edits done in Final Cut as a virus possibility. Also rumor has it (AHEMCAUGHDIDINGHEARITFROMMEacaugh) that Symantec only has (CAUGH4BLEH) people left on the Mac-Norton Anti-virus team.

Re: Anti-Virus

Thanks Guy and Wave. Wow the Mac-Norton team's turning in to the Maytag man!

Re: Anti-Virus

Correction: There are about 50 known Mac viruses, none of which can harm a system running OS X.

For now, Macs running Panther are immune to all know viruses. This may not always be the case, however. Be ready to buy McAffie or Norton protection once an actual virus has been discovered. But wait until then--an antivirus program has more potential for harm to your system than good right now.

Re: Anti-Virus

One of the best things is a firewall. Better yet if you can, don't even hook up your editing station to the internet. Yes the Mac is immune, for now. It is a matter of time. But the thing you want to be thinking about is where are your digital files going besides your machine? Will you be passing along a burned demo off to someone that edits it in Vegas? Are you going to send a .txt or better yet a .doc file to a Windows user? Even though your Mac is safe, everyone after/before your machine isn't. Viruses can be carried from Mac to Mac to Mac and somewhere in between an email or audio file make its way onto a PC.

$99 can get you a .Mac membership which comes with Virex and a years worth of updates and all the cool things mac, etc. You can just get Virex but you still have to pay for Updating every month. Might be cheaper but I think it comes out to the same price. I think.

As far as free check out: http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp

good luck

Re: Anti-Virus

which company makes good affordable firewall protection and what kind of specs should i look for. I am on cable modemn.

Re: Anti-Virus

The Mac has firewall protection built in. You can set permissions and restrictions for all your ports.
Avoid Virex since it conflicts with FCP and other software.
