Another thread about dedicated section for FS7

Moderators, any idea what's happening with the FS7 prefix or dedicated section?

With the FS7 being "new" its completely diluted the F5/F55 section. As it stands it's currently impossible to sort out the threads accordingly.

Worse FS7 posts have had to use the F5 prefix that is a forced option in that section so all F5 specific related threads are now lost in 3-4 months of FS7 specific posts.

Any updates on this would be greatly appreciated, it was asked for and discussed back in October/November, maybe even September. I myself was even told by a moderator that all was well and it was in the works, that was October or November.

It's gotten quite irritating for many forum users including myself. Please let us know what is happening.

Thank you.

Hey. I will get this squared away in the next day or so. Please remind me if it's not up by the end of the weekend. Just have a few other more pressing things on the list, first.

If someone wants to start compiling a list of thread links to f7 threads that have incorrect prefixes on them, I'll also begin the process of giving them all their proper prefixes.

Great news Jason. Will FS7 stay in that section or can we move it to NEX / e-mount camera section with the others?

As for the list, I will do it. How would you like the list exactly? Let me know what file and format you want the list in.

Lastly I can volunteer to mod that section even if temporarily to straighten out the prefixes and what not and move FS7 threads to a new or other section.

Cheers,

My personal opinion is to move it. The F5/F55 have lots to talk about and lots of functionality that does not and never will apply to the FS7.

The FS7 has completely diluted the F5/F55 cameras. Not to mention the F3.

And yet the FS7 has as much in common with the F5 as the F5 has in common with the F55.

We've discussed this before but I think S35mm sensor cameras belong together with their own prefixes.

There can certainly be a 'so you're new to the FS7/F5/F55' FAQ stickied with all the boring newbie questions answered for each camera which should remove some clutter, but as a shooter I am interested in what other S35mm filmmakers are trying to achieve image-wise. Just as many people seem to be downsizing kit from high end gear that can inform the conversation as there are people upgrading from low-end gear that maybe need more of a step up.

To be frank, I just don't want or need to read about the FS7 camera.

This camera has gamma similarities and can add 4K RAW just like FS700 but its NOT a F5/55. Your also looking a specs, not production use and related workflow.

It was a fun few months over winter months to chime in on FS7 but its time to resume with regular business.

I'd like it to be moved.

If you want to visit once and a while no one will atop you.

Need to figure out if there is a consensus one way or the other.

But, if you don't want to see it, you can always click the thread prefix you want to see at that moment, and it will filter out all the other threads that don't have the prefix you selected. (click again to reset)

We can argue this point all day and to be honest having literally written the book on F5/F55 you probably don't 'need' to read about the F5 and F55 either ;)

I'm just putting across the other voice ahead of any decisions being made.

Seems like the perfect answer that allows us all to customise our viewing/forumming experiences. :)

Ben with all due respect you are thinking of the benefit it brings you and other FS7 owners, but not the disadvantage and hassle it brings F5/55 users.

I also never agreed that the F65 should be grouped with a 10 year old camera in its own section. The F65 and F55 are same color, global shutter, etc.. but they are split too.

As for consensus it's biased so I guess logic won't prevail. I'm done "discussing" it, at this point I will only repeat myself.

With all due respect you are doing the same, and I don't know how/why it impacts you if you filter out FS7 prefixes.

Whatever will be will be I guess.

I'm not really up on what is what as far as cameras these days, but this seems to make sense to me:

You guys realize the FS100/FS700 have the prefix "NEX", the F3/F5/F55 have the prefix "PMW" and the "FS7" has the prefix "PXW"... clearly Sony themselves see this as the start of a new line. Maybe there should be a Large Sensor NEX, Large Sensor PXW, and Large Sensor PMW sections

It certainly jives with what we've already got. So, it seems (in this case), a new sub-forum for the FS7 would be most appropriate.

We need to see about getting some section moderators for these sections, and give the whole Sony section some love.

But, the first thing is to get the fs7 users a proper place to post.

I'm leaning towards a main page sub-forum at the moment. If it is indeed considered a new line by Sony, then it seems appropriate to create a new space to house this (and other possible cameras that are released in the future under the same line)

EDIT TO ADD: My question is with regards to workflow similarities between various cameras. If some of these cameras (even though they are classified under a different product line) have the same workflow, maybe a common workflow section at the main level would be appropriate, while also maintaining camera specific sections for camera specific discussion like we have now.

My 2 cents on this. This is a community. A group of people of all different experiences and with varying backgrounds and often quite different day to day jobs. But the community works best when people are exchanging ideas offering advice and sharing knowledge. Putting the FS7 in the FS700 section may be technically more correct for some - but I don't believe it encourages all of those community ideals best. Put it in the F5/F55 section (albeit with the ability to filter out prefixes) and you are putting people in the same section who are much more likely to interact. The FS7 owners can be learning about the shared sensor, CINE EI, Looks and LUTS, SLOG3, modular design etc etc And maybe you will get some F5 users who might be thinking of the FS7 as a cheap B Cam.

I'm going to go ahead and add an f7 prefix to the existing section for now so I can start changing all of the threads to the proper prefix. Will figure out what to do with it after that is done.

Leaning towards a new sub-forum for it, as it seems to lineup best with Sony's model names, and will hopefully make more sense as part of a larger reorganization of the Sony section.

EDIT: I've got prefixes added to the first 8 pages so far. Looks like I am around halfway done. Will finish the rest by the end of the week.

The main thing right now is at least getting a prefix so it will be easier to deal with later, and so the fs7 folks at least have a proper way to post threads.

I've been absent too much lately, and need to get some re-org done before I move onto other projects for the forum.

So, over the next few weeks or so, I'll focus on the whole Sony section, and we can all hash out how to organize things. The Sony users on the forum are overdue for some love, so might as well start with that section :)

I know there won't be unanimous agreement, but hopefully we can get something more functional, and representative of the various camera models, as well as taking into account what the most popular cameras/models are for the members on *this* forum.

The size of the user base on dvxuser for a particular camera is something to be considered in addition trying to establish a relatively approachable structure of the main page.

I'm going to finish the prefixes for the FS7, as well as adding them to any that need it in the footage section. Once that is done, perhaps I will create a new thread to discuss the reorganization of the sony section at large, and give folks an opportunity to chime in.

EDIT: Think I am done with all the prefixes

I can see how sharing the forum with F5 and F55 users would be a good deal for FS7 users. But I see no advantage for F5 and F55 users. Besides the FS7 doesn’t fit there.

I don’t see the reason for the confusion. I think it should be pretty clear. Cameras should be separated by market or user base. The kind of buyer who buys a FS7 is not the same type of buyer who buys a F55. The cameras are clearly directed at different users and should be in different forums. The best is to keep the same type of users together.
So I think the FS7 should have it’s own forum or be with the FS700. The people who buy FS7 cameras are mostly the same who would buy a FS700. Not the same who would buy a F55, unless F55 owners would buy a FS7 for b camera. But that is different.

Having said that I have put an order for a FS7. Even with all the faults and unimpressive image, it’s $8000 and for that little it’s a great deal.

I also never agreed that the F65 should be grouped with a 10 year old camera in its own section. The F65 and F55 are same color, global shutter, etc.. but they are split too.

How can you say that? They even look basically identical. I think the F35 and F65 absolutely should be together. The F65 is the replacement for the F35. The people who would use a F65 and the people who would use or have used a F35 are basically the same type of people. People who need the highest end camera. The two cameras even look basically the same. If you look fast you can confuse one for the other. They clearly are related. The F55 has a different type of buyer and market all together. The F55 is clearly more of an owner operator camera because it’s much cheaper. The F65 like the F35 was always a rental type of camera like the Alexa. Just because the F55 has a global shutter and similar color doesn’t mean they are alike. They don’t share the same sensor or the same form factor or same buyer base. They share nothing really. The BMC4k has a global shutter too and it doesn’t make it like the F55. The F65 is a totally different camera from the F55. The F35 and F65 absolutely fit together.
