Another successful Kickstarter project

i'm all for someone sticking to their vision, but how in the world did this get over $105k?

I wondered that too, but then I looked into all that the guy has going on and how long he's had it going on. He's got a few successful web comics that sort operate as blogs and forums. He also owns a comic shop which he advertises via all his blogs/forums/comic strips. Also he has people doing animations of his web comics (one of which, a parody on The Little Mermaid's "A Whole New World" has like 6.5 million hits -- link below). It looks like he's been at it for over 5 years, so via lots and lots (and lots) of pretty ingenius marketing I think he's developed a solid and loyal fan base. One of the smarter (marketing-wise) comics that he does is a weekly (I think it's weekly anyway) guest starring artist comic strip that uses known DC and Marvel properties in parody. In the blog he then gives a brief bio of the artist. So, basically, he's making one page comic strips and he's getting the art for free because the artists are seeing it as exposure, and by using major characters in parody, he's essentially getting what you'd get out of making a fan film short. It looks like he's quietly put together quite the little empire. I'm absolutely picking apart all of his sites and youtube channels. He's got a ridiculous amount of merch and POD collections. Pretty crazy. It appears to be relatively organic, though. Comic book shop owner turns comic strip writer/blogger. Makes sense.

What's funny is that I think his marketing is actually better than his material (which is also good). Obviously his comic strips and animations aren't the kinds of things that they can show on TV, which ads to the internet appeal, but I really think the branding is unlike anything I've ever seen from an independent.

This is his core site, just so you can see the epic widespreadedness

And here's just one of the many ways that they're managing to monetize their online content:

I think I could pretty much write a thesis paper about online sales/funding/distro/et al just using this company as a framework. lol
