Another self made crane! I am new here!

How high? I never measured it... becos I went directly to see the final effect...
Anyway I think not higher than 4 metres... And it depends also on the tripod extension.

Nothing special respect to other self made cranes, only that this has been thinked to be modular, lightweight and EASY transportable! This is my seventh prototype!

hmmmm, so do you have any commercial intentions or you are just doing it for your self and can we see any footage?

Thanks 4 asking!
I made hundreds of experiments the last year here in Japan. I was working on a taoist way to shoot movies.
Sorry it's too complicated to explain such philosophical matters here and now.
From now on I'm going to buy a DVX100B and continue my experiments of "street movies" rising tech quality to higher levels and also try some other thing like plain documentaries, interviews, etc.

Here is my site where you can see some of my Street Movies.

Sorry it's almost italian.

If you want to see the crane in action (I think it's impressive!) you should have the patience to see a 30 minutes documentary about Japan and Tonga Islands. It's "Tonga Monogatari".

OR if you want you can FF to the 3rd minutes and to the 18th minute of the footage.

Let me know your impressions! I really need some advices!

Ishkandar,

Good work on the crane! What was that song in "Tonga Monogatan" that starts at 18:40? I like the feel of that song a lot. Oh and do you intend to ever show how you made that crane of yours? since you posted in the DIY section it makes me want to "do it myself" with some help of course. :)

Alessandro,

That's a cooling looking crane. Please share some pics on how you constructed it.

Thanks,
James

I cannot post here pictures so for now I will just tell about some behind the scene of my crane project.

Sorry for my poor english... It's the language I handle less...

I have to say that the crane you can see on my site and in action in some video is the seventh generation crane.

I build it bearing in mind my own requests: strong, affordable, lightweight, modular, transportable together with camera, tripod and counterweights by MYSELF only and by bike!

Another point during the project phase was to AVOID a third person work on the materials becos it is very hard to let someone understand how we need some pieces to be treated or shaped. So my challenge was to PUT together the crane with the MINUMUM side work. Only going to some home senter, buying pieces go home and put them together.

i have to say that I was lucky or trained (?) in recognize what could go well for the project.

The fulcrum is just a usual cart wheel upside down. The one of shoppiong cart with good ball bearings.

The pipe is perhaps the most expensive part... I bought them in Italy and it's a GOOD aluminium pipe with a particular shape used to create HIGH PRESSURE AIR PIPELINES. So it's squared outside but it's round inside.

The BEST of this choice is that I could cut the pipe in the wanted modular size (50cm each) and then use the native connector for these pipelines to joint the modules.

Then, usual gym counterweights and steel cable to avoid the crane to collapse and create a rigid structure when assembled.

Minor steel pieces to create the camera holder as lightest as possibile.

An old tripod sacrificed for this work.

Absolutely ball bearings inside any moving part to avoid noise and ensure smooth operations.

Hope to post detailed pics somewhere.

Anyway cutting the pipe apart NO additional manual work! Only assemble parts bought somewhere. With a good eye you can purchase in the market down your street everything you need, go home and with a simple bricolage tool put everything together.

Now I m waiting to go back to Italy to buy some other 3 meters of special pipe in the shop "down the street of my old house"!

The crane is modular and goes well even for indoor operations. But I want to take it to higher heights. At least to 5 meters. And you know that if you choose good the location (ie from a balcony, from a stairs, etc) you can earn other 5 meters elevation mouvement, exploiting also the usually non used negative space beneath the base...

Hope to explain myself...

That song is "World Citizen" arranged by Ikeda Ryoji.
