Another reason why 4K could be agreeable in the near future...

The new Mac Pro… now I know a lot of you will swear to pc systems, some to hackintosh and some, like myself, to Apple.

I don't want to start a pc vs mac fight (all threads that ends with that starts like this dont they ;) ), but I've been anxiously awaiting to see what this new odd one out can perform in tests.

So it's only been a day or so, but these guys went and grabbed some un-transcoded 4K Red footage (1:8) and stuck in it FCP X (who cares… just watch) and added a bunch of filters and effects. "A bunch" in this case being 18…

How does the 8 core, 64gb ram 1tb SSD, 2x D700 Mac Pro handle that?

*Hint* it doesn't drop a single frame, and you can shuffle back and forth in real time without delay.

So what was that about 4K not being there yet? I'd say we are here now… I'd get the new Mac Pro for fun and throw 4K after customers for fun just because we are now able to. Money is an ill concept. As long as you are well fed and have a roof over your head, all that matters is that you have fun.

EDIT:

Price point for the above setup, not including the raid they used, but including keyboard and Apple Care ;)

US: $ 8397
UK: £ 6818
DK: kr 58857
DE: € 8397

Remember, this is with Apple's ram, so you could probably save some money by buying something else. OWC has just opened up for sales of ram specifically for the new Mac Pro and it's a lot cheaper than Apples and still ECC.

I've always wanted a Mac, and each 3 year period where I do a major upgrade, I do price comparisons. Macs were always substantially more for the same performance.

Are they closing the gap? I'd love to jump on board next time around. I build my own from scratch, so I get a lot of bang for the buck with a PC.

That's very, VERY impressive. Being able to edit natively in redcode takes a LOT of the pain out of dealing with a Red workflow. Very exciting times.

Try and build a pc of the exact same parts and see the price... Not just some bits and piece that match in performance.
Also, I dont know about where you live but here there is no warranty when you build it yourself.
I kinda like the no questions asked mentality of Apple. Thats how I got a new monitor in my 9 month old mbp... back when I had pcs the reseller always had questions wether I had done something wrong or not.

You can edit R3D's in a Macbook air! I do it all the time... works great on Premiere.

Uh, no, that is with a crappy laptop monitor and not near full rez. This thing is 100 times what a macbook is. He also had a lot of filters applied, try that with your little laptop. Two different worlds... no, galaxies.

In that test those clips were not full rez either.
