Another Question about Filters!

Christmas time is coming and that means I'm gonna get some filters! Since...uhh...yeah.

Anyhow, I'm considering an 85b filter since I'll be doing a lot of low-light out-door shooting (a short horror movie that takes place in the woods at night!) But, uh....look at all the choices:

Do I want a Tiffen? Is the Hoya okay? Do I want the HMC or whatever? I don't want to spend too much money...

I'm also planning to get a polarizer (I like deep blue skies and there may be snow) but I don't want issues when I pan and tilt? Would a circular polarizer work better than a regular one for this? Is this a good choice: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=72728&is=REG ?

Also, I want one ND filter so I can keep the iris open at all times. I figure I only need one to add onto the two the DVX already has, although if two can be purchased cheapy I'd go for that. Any advice?

Re: Another Question about Filters!

The less glass in front of the lens the better. Especially DV.

You do not need a color temp correction filter to shoot out doors on a DVX - that is what your white balance is for. (85B is a color temp conversion for tungsten balanced film to daylight color temp. therefore it is warm)

ND Filter is good if you think you need additional light loss but remember your polariser does this also - (one & two thirds stop loss factor)

You can easily post grade or colour balance to an 85B look if that is what you want or you could set your camera setup to shoot additional warmth.

I kind of suspect maybe you are wanting a bluish nightime effect tho' ????

Re: Another Question about Filters!

I get a lot of noise in dark areas with my outdoors white balance setting and I'll be shooting in the snow and in the woods which means tricky dynamic range issues (bright snow, dark trees) and I'm hoping that the 85B filter will help reduce the noise (I get a lose less noise with indoors white balance) and the polarizer will reduce glare from the snow.

I need the ND since I want to keep the iris open for shallow DOF, and--as it is--with just three ND settings (none, 1/8th, 1/64th) I can't aviod stopping the iris down a bit at times. I just want to make sure the NDs I get will be useful (so that I can stack them with the built in NDs to get the greatest adjustability.)

And I do want a bluish night look but I'm going to use blue filters over tungsten lights to achieve this mostly. (Renting a generator and bringing it into the woods.) I'll also use these lights to fill in the foreground so that I don't have too many dynamic range issues (I hope!)

Any advice regarding brands, btw?

Thanks.

Re: Another Question about Filters!

Very strange that the Daylight white balance preset gives you noise.

Brands - can't go wrong with Tiffen

Re: Another Question about Filters!

Sounds good. And, yeah, it's weird but definitely true. There are other threads on it and it has something to do with boosting the orange levels or something. It's not a ton of noise, but enough that I'd rather not have it.

Tiffen sounds good. It's not too expensive, either.
