ANOTHER Octava question...

You only use that when you're recording really loud noises that will overload the mic input.

If you go to a concert, car races, firing range, live rock music in close range... screw the -10db pad onto the mic body and then screw the head on that... now you have a mic that's 10db less sensitive and less prone to clip your levels.

I also find that to be handy in really reverberrant rooms. If you have tons of echo sometime try adding the -10db pad... and then gaining up at the camera (or mixer or recorder)... this takes care of more reverb then you'd think.

For normal everyday use I'd leave the -10db pad off and just adjust levels on whatever device you're using to record.
