Another new Sony - PMW-100!

Yeah, looks like a pretty much carbon-copy of the XF105.

When i read the article, i thought it might be a late April Fool's prank, it sounded so much like the XF105. I pulled up some pics of the XF to compare them, just to make sure the Sony was legit. They are different.
I wonder if Sony will have a 3-chip version next?

Sony's on a roll! They just keep spittin' em out:

50mbps, 4:2:2, using SxS cards. Nice!

Oh wow! Sony introduces a camera to compete with the HVX200 / HPX 170. Such great timing. Uh ... maybe not ... but ...

Have we ever seen Sony 4:2:2 on SxS cards before? So does that mean we could see a Sony Camera with the 4:2:2 and a 35mm chip inside the same camera at the same time, without the need for an external recording device?

That's one of the first things I thought of. This little camera gets 4:2:2, but not the F3 and FS100/700? Really?

Once - the PMW-500.

You could always have seen that with the F3, if they'd just decided to build it that way. But they didn't. Can't fathom why not.

how do single sensor, full raster, bayer, 422 cameras like this manage all the colour and pixels!?

every pair of horizontal pixels is averaged out to one colour? 422

every block of four pixels has 2x green, 1x red, 1x blue filter? bayer
these combine to form one colour?

so that means... every pair of pixels gets it's own green channel?
or that 422 isn't really helping because of the bayer?

having a hard time getting my head around it

I imagine the results would be different depending on whether the image was debayered before or after the colour space compression, but I don't know what those differences would be...?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, I'm just curious as to how this method (and that of the xf100) would compare to a hypothetical ideal 3xchip/foveon/f35,c300 sensor compressed with 4:4:4 colour (where every pixel has it's own colour information and is also recorded as such), and also to a real 3xchip 4:2:0 camera

Cheers!

feel free to draw me a diagram if you like

edit: ok reading a bit more about it I found this which says this about bayer
"at each pixel only one of these colors will be measured, but the missing color information for each pixel can be extrapolated from its neighbors"
I was thinking before that bayers did the same thing as 4:2:0 colour space....

Can anyone find anything about it having or not having a built-in ND switch? Also what is the maximum aperture and is it constant through the zoom range?.. Looks like a awesome little news gathering machine and does this mean the EX-1 might be getting a update since it's supposed to be it's big brother? Maybe NAB will answer that..

lens isn't constant

From the specs
10x (optical), servo/manual

f = 5.4 - 54 mm (equivalent to 40-400 mm on 35 mm lens)

F1.8 - F2.9auto/manual selectable

AF/MF selectable,10 mm to ∞ (Wide),800 mm to ∞ (Tele)

ON/OFF selectable, shift lens M37 mm, pitch 0.75mm

doesn't say anything about ND.....
but then it doesn't say anything about time lapse function, I read somewhere else that it has that

It does have selectable gammas including 4 hyper gammas, 24 bit audio, HD-SDI, negative gain.....lots of stuff like the XF 105. It seems that under 5 grand you have the choice of large sensor with lesser codec, less features like the FS100 and the DSLRs (much less in that case) or fully featured small chip cameras. The lines are once again being drawn.
Maybe Panasonic (already with the lowest price in this group) will shock and awe at this price point...but it seems to me the manufacturers are slowly pushing the price UP on getting a large chip in a camcorder style body/features/etc
