Another 'how was this done' thread - chairlift video

Another 'how was it done thread'. Was trying to sleep in this Saturday morning but was cruelly denied. So watching muisc videos on Rage in lieu of facing the day (and the mowing that's long overdue) came across this fascinating video by Chairlift. It looks like compositing using an animated gif or avi compression algorithm somehow to generate the matte. At least I've seen corrupted gifs and avis playback a similar pattern.

It's called "datamoshing". It's not really a post effect in the sense of something a FX artist would typically do. It's actually something your compressionist would do.

It's from long gop compression and manipulating keyframes

These 2 videos describe how to do it (but WARNING: extremely annoying!!!!)

Thanks. I was guessing a complicated way of doing what I'd seen in corrupted files, when in fact they simply corrupted the files to get the effect, haha.
