another health topic

Hi there,

So I decided to try my hand at one of these health topics people have been posting up. Do any of you DVXuser's have do anything to increase your memory capabilites? Or to atleast retain as much as you can? In other words, what do you do to keep a healthy memory? Lately I've been having problems with my short term memory, not so much long term but short term. For example, I can come home from work and park my car, lock my car and literally about half a minute or less later I won't remember if I locked my car or not. It's been getting pretty bad. Now this is really important because it sometimes affects my workflow, being an assistant editor. Plus I want to be able to remember things for other jobs, say when on set I need to remember what goes where or what does what. So, any suggestions or practices? I think vitamin B helps, but want to know what works for you guys.
Also, as a side note. What do you find the best time to read books are, to keep it in your memory bank? Night time before bed, morning, after noon? I ask this because I've been reading some books about gaffing and set lighting tools before bed and in the morning when I wake up I'd be thinking about HMI's and ballasts  Which is good because it seems to stay fresh in my head, but just wondering if it's the best way. Anyways, let us know.

Have you tried 'Brain Age' for the Nintendo DS ?

Ginsing is good as well, but 'Brain Age' is built just for this exact situation you are having. 130 for DS, 20 for Brain Age. 150 not a bad investment for FUN

It also tracks your progress and the professor is pretty funny.

Cynic821 are you serious?

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but am serious. Does this really help? Thanks.
Anyone else have suggestions? So far we have Brain Age and Ginsing.

Spearmint leaves in water. Morning. Don't eat the leaves though.

Or check if you have fallen in love.

Ok. I'll try spearmint leaves in the morning. And I have fallen in love a while ago, but shortly fell out...whatever.

So we have Brain Age, ginsing and Spearmint leaves, what else you guys got?

Yes, im 100% serious. The games are fun, and the professor in the game, (who is actually a real professor who helped develop it from years of studies) encourages you adn actually makes you want to do better and you find yourself hoping the next day comes quicker so you can top yesterdays scores.

Its not like games where you can master, it is using parts of your brain that you dont excersise on a regular basis. So you never really do master it, but you continually grow and get better and lets you know how strong your brain is growing.

One of my faves is the colored word exercise. Example: it shows words like , Blue, red, green, yellow, black. but the font color of the word is a different color than the word, and you have to say the color of the font, not the word. Good times. Voice recognition and handwriting recognition are SPOT ON too.

Ginseng is supposed to help...also, are you getting good sleep at night? If you're body is not entering REM sleep it can affect your short term memory

Ok. But does it help with memory? And if so, how?

Well, a short while ago, I was going to be around 2am and waking up around 9:40am. But now I go to bed around 12am and wake up around 9:40.

From nintendo:
What is Brain Age?

Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day for Nintendo DS is a fun, rewarding form of entertainment everyone can enjoy, as it helps players flex their mental muscles. Brain Age is inspired by the research of Dr. Ryuta Kawashima, a prominent Japanese neuroscientist. His studies evaluated the impact of performing certain reading and mathematic exercises to help stimulate the brain.

Brain Age presents quick mental activities that help keep your DS brain in shape. Activities include quickly solving simple math problems, counting people going in and out of a house simultaneously, drawing pictures on the Touch Screen, reading classic literature out loud, and more. You can also play sudoku, the number puzzle game which has become an extremely popular feature in U.S. newspapers.

On your first day of exercise, you will take a series of tests and get a score that determines how old your brain is. This number is called your "DS Brain Age". By performing daily exercises just minutes a day over weeks and months, the better you'll get at the exercises and the lower your DS Brain Age will become.

Why is brain training good for you?

We all know as we grow older our bodies change and it becomes important to regularly exercise to maintain health and fitness. Our brain is no different. "Use it or lose it," as the adage goes. New research indicates mental acuity may be strengthened, like muscles, with brain exercises.

That's where Brain Age comes in.

Dr. Elizabeth Zelinski, dean and executive director of University of Southern California’s Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, says games like Brain Age can help keep older generations of Americans’ minds active. “Americans can do a great deal to maintain and even improve their mental abilities,” Zelinski explains. “Aging is about taking on new challenges for our minds. Nintendo’s Brain Age is a great way to do that.”

But how does Brain Age work?

The Brain Age exercises are designed to stimulate your brain. Solving simple math and logic problems quickly, and reading aloud, have been proven to be effective methods of achieving this goal.

The distinctive Nintendo DS Touch Screen lets users write their answers with a Stylus pen, just as though they were writing on paper or using a Personal Digital Assistant or "PDA". Furthermore, the Nintendo DS's voice input identifies particular words you'll speak during the Stroop Test.

Brain Age tracks your progression through each exercise with easy-to-read line charts. Consistently using Brain Age each day will open new exercises to test your ability.

Brain Age includes a fun calculation competition for friends and family. Only one Brain Age Game Card is needed. With the DS's user-friendly interface, it's a snap to download this minigame to as many as 15 DS systems!

Baby Boomers and test-prepping school kids alike want to challenge themselves and find ways to stay sharp. Brain Age acts like a treadmill for the mind. With the simplicity of the Nintendo DS, and Brain Age's challenging and rewarding exercises, everyone can stimulate their DS brain, improving speed and accuracy of their game play.

"problems with my short term memory, not so much long term but short term"

are you indoors all day ?
i just read something about this in December .. can't rememeber where /( maybe i have it too) .... some study - it stated that fresh air and walking/exercise helps short term memory - think they said min of 20 min 4 days week outdoors exercise/walking - something to get the blood flowing

Yeah, I'm in doors waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much. Full time assistant editor 40hrs week, after work I go home and stay in doors. You know, it seems like ever since I stopped skateboarding I had this problem, it sucks.

Same here, out doors on the weekends playing football and baseball though. But 40 hours a week in san jose, plus another 2 hours in the car every day. get home and veg in front of the tv (hence my obsession for a perfect tv for me)

sigh...this topic is starting to get me depressed. I work all day and don't have time to get out, how am I supposed to work on my short term memory problem? :(

Seems that way doesnt it? Thats how i feel, i love my job, but driving home everyday i want to quit. Take a good 3 day weekend youll feel better, and put it into perspective that there are A ton of hours really when you get home, even if its only 4 or so. Train your brain with brain age for like 20 minutes a day, its not that long and beats watching kaka thats on tv.

So you've seen self-improvement with Brain Age? Also, I'll be helping out with productions on weekends a lot more pretty soon so I hope it helps.

And for anyone else reading this, I don't want you to think this is a thread about Brain Age alone, so chime in and let me know what your methods are. Anything as I think it will benefit the whole board and not only Cynic821 and I.

i cant give statistical evidence, since im not too serious about bettering my memory, but if at minimum i have fun playing it and i get better at the excersises over time, if i dont play for a week, i dont lose to many brain age years, but i get better again.

I dont have a practicle situation to give an example that it proved to work, aside from the fact that im getting better at memorizing the random exercises in the game, so that means im improving something. and these guys are PHDs that made the game. Brain Age 2 is coming soon in the US, its already out in Japan. Worldwide its sold almost 7 million copies. Thats compared to 36 million Nintendo DS systems sold.

EDIT!: mis read 16 million from 36 million. So 20% of DS owners have Brain Age, not half, but thats still a bucketload.
