They have develped a "Software based cinema"DVD, which is "a 'cinema' in which human subjectivity and the variable choices made by custom software combine to create films that can run infinitely without ever exactly repeating the same image sequences, screen layouts and narratives."

That's right, "films that can run infinitely without ever exactly reapeating the same image sequences, screen layouts and narratives" How cool is that.Very "art school" I'm sure, but very cool and sci-fi to boot. I look forward to checking it out.

Isn't the use of database managment software to edit movies the first step towards computer "self realization"?

Wait i dont get it....isnt it just CGI models of the actors acting and tahts it? or am I misunderstanding this?

No this goes beyond cg to the actual viewing experience. What this does is use what ever images and sounds, including screen variations are in the database and varies everytime it is watched to change the experience almost infinitely.

So like....lets say if a car crashes...it crashes the car in different ways depending if the person whos making it wants it the same or random? and the crash is like different sounding each time, depending what hit first?

...or like....its ''edited'' together differently? like scenes have different angles everytime they are pllayed back?

I dunno...

computerized movie making where there is no artistic input doesn't seem to me to be a very exciting endeavor.

Even computerized music needs someone directing it.

Maybe i'm just an old fart.

I don't know, I have just seen the info on the website. I have not seen the DVD. Just assuming, but I would image that scenes are still linked with their audio. Just how it works, I don't know. I doubt that it has a strong narrative, like a regular movie. I would think that the designers are fans of Marshall Mcluhan and have read, "The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects", way too much.

I still think that it sounds like a very cool experiment and I am looking forward to seeing it.

Like I said above, I haven't seen it, but I would think that the randomness or variations is part of the design and is probably the point they are kinda making.

I really do not think that this is the end of fictional narrative as we know it, but I still think it is worthy of a look.

....sounds kinda stupid...it takes the fun out of making shots....directing and everything...and actually making the movie........gosh....WHY IS EVERYTHING BEING RAN BY FREAKKING COMPUTERS!??!

pretty soon we'll prolly eat food from a freaking computer...

Yeah, It is definitely not aimed at mainstream audiences. It is very much an art school post-grad kind of project. I am interested just because it is attempting to develop a new kind of aesthetic. I also have read too much McLuhan and Eisenstein (can't say that I understand either though). Here is a summary of what they are doing.

"SOFT CINEMA explores 4 ideas:

1. "Algorithmic Cinema."
Using a script and a system of rules defined by the authors, the software controls the screen layout, the number of windows and their content. The authors can choose to exercise minimal control leaving most choices to the software; alternatively they can specify exactly what the viewer will see in a particular moment in time. Regardless, since the actual editing is performed in real time by the program, the movies can run infinitely without ever exactly repeating the same edits.
2. "Macro-cinema." If a computer user employs windows of different proportions and sizes, why not adopt the similar aesthetics for cinema?
3. "Multimedia cinema." In Soft Cinema, video is used as only one type of representation among others: 2D animation, motion graphics, 3D scenes, diagrams, maps, etc.
4. "Database Cinema." The media elements are selected from a large database to construct a potentially unlimited number of different narrative films, or different versions of the same film. We also approach database as a new representational form in its own right. Accordingly, we investigate different ways to visualise Soft Cinema databases. "

I don't think it wil replace regular films, but with new way of video distrbution, cell phones, iPods, PDAs and the like, this may be an interesting addition to the mix. Who knows.

There's so many formats now for video and pictures...its kinda rediculous.

Cell Phone video...mpeg 4 compression (i think it is..not 100% sure)...Ipods...well they hold any kinda of photo..but i bet if they made a video supporting Ipod...itd have to be a special apple format knowing them...PDAs....some take .wmv..but they need special compression and cropping.

I wonder why there isnt just one format that everyproduct can read...Fone, Ipod, PDA, Portable playing devices (PSP)
