another "capture from my vcr" question

I've noticed for some time on this forum how much trouble folks have capturing from a VCR tape, through their DVX, and into Vegas. Now I'm one of them.

(for the record, I've recently recorded ONTO a vcr tape, and had to first 'print to tape' from Vegas to the DVX, then run that out to the VCR.)

Now I'm trying to capture VCR footage onto my harddrive.

What all settings do I need to fiddle with? I can't even get what's playing on the VCR to show up on the LCD of my DVX. I'd assume if I could at least get that to work, I could, at worst, record it on the mini-DV tape, then capture that using Vegas...

Are there settings in my DVX that need changed in VCR mode in order to allow the incoming VCR stream to be recognized/show up?

thanks

BTW, I already found a thread in here where the dude had to 'disable DV device control,' but like I said, I can't even get the image into my DVX; it won't even appear on the LCD for me to even try and capture.

I eventually got the signal into the DVX, but not into Vegas, so just recorded onto mini-DV, then captured that into Vegas.

(my VCR has a menu option where I have to designate signal 'in' or 'out,' which I thought I'd done, but apparently not)
