Another 3rd of November announcement

It will happen on the 3rd of November at 20:15 German time. It's 90 minutes long and it's a TV-movie. It will be shown on the second national channel ZDF. It is called MÄNNER TICKEN, FRAUEN ANDERS.

We did not care on what camera we shot - as long as the machine we used did what we wanted. So we used an ALEXA, a AG-AF 101, a Canon 5D and a Panasonic GH2. If RED gives us a better machine, if Canon comes with a great printer on the same day. ;-) .... we will be happy about it and will use it according to it's abilities.

As thrilled we may be what machine comes next - let's use what we have and let's not start becoming religious about cameras. The future is "multicam" anyhow.

We decided to not use it as a B-cam, because - obviously - this would not work well (there has to be a reason why they have a slightly different price-tag... ;-)) but to use it for some extra-shots where and when we could not bring into action our "grown-up" camera.

I will have higher resolution material up by next week that will allow for a better comparison. Whenever the shots where clearly distinct from the a-cam material in a sense (establishing shots, unusual viewpoints, background material for title-sequence) we were rather happy with it. Even the guy who did the grading would accept the material as long as there was no need to really push it around - which we checked with him beforehand.

So - while being a nice camera for independent work per se and nearly perfect (concerning the price tag) for web-based material, it can also be (under clearly defined circumstances) go "upmarket" at times. This is what we wanted to find out. It's a great little Japanese "Volkswagen".

So: Did we see the difference? Clearly yes. Was it a problem for the flow of the story? Not as long as we were careful. Would the audience see the difference? Not really as long as the story would carry them. We had a projection in a rather big 380 seat theater at the HAMBURG FILMFEST 2011 and nobody complained.

Great stuff, and yes this is why I think you should always have a DSLR on set (there are some shots that only can be done with them)

Great shots with the RC Helicopter.

I've flown a little (Ok Crashed a little) with a Go Pro on a quadracopter... still to early to build one for my AF100...


There are a lot of great cameras out there and so glad to see someone embrace all the pros and cons of each one.

Too much camera Taliban around here sometimes. The man who DP'ed this clip once taught us "Either you shoot with what you have or you don't shoot at all" and - letting the carcass of his "de-constructed" Arri IIC swirl around his finger - "Less respect, please." Tools. I like them a lot. But tools.
