Annual Insurance for your Video Production Company

Hey Guys,

I know there have been lots of threads made re: insurance, but I'm specifically looking to hear from some guys who've operated their own video production companies (even if you're a single-member LLC) and who have dealt with finding annual insurance for their business.

I've called a lot of the usual suspects and they all want me to fill out applications that seem more relevant for larger scale film production companies. My company produces mainly corporate/industrial fare and it's usually myself and a half-dozen crew shooting on a green screen in a conference room. I'm looking for a policy that's more tailored to the level of production I do, which is decidedly small-scale. I'm mainly looking for general liability, coverage for my gear (I own about $20k worth of gear) and third party property damage (if I scratch a floor, break a lamp, etc).

Anyone have any tips, leads or experience in dealing with this? I have a shoot coming up next week that I'd like to have coverage for (if only because I'm a worrier), but I'm getting no traction with the usual roads. Would love to hear from those who have been there, done that.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Have you contacted the insurance agent you have the rest of your insurance through like your home and auto?
Many will tailor a custom rider for your business. That's what I did.

No idea what the US is like - but here in Aus (might be useful for Aus members) most of the larger insurers are happy to give you production insurance - unless you go on anyone elses property. What it means is they will only underwrite a basic policy. To get a real production insurance policy it'll cost around $2k per year.

I have our small production company insured and it was pretty easy. I have our equipment covered, as well as for rentals, which the rental companies require. We have liability, and we cover our freelancers with workers comp. It's not overly expensive, under $4k a year. But it is absolutely necessary, and some contracts require proof of the coverage. Send me a PM and I can give you the name and # of the agent.

I'm actually in the process of switching insurances. With one company that i'm really not happy with; and just today reviewed a new contract with another company. Will keep you posted. Looks like it covers everything, and for under 1k/yr
