Animation

I have just finished an animation, for my short film. Well.. technically I finished it last year.. but I have been wanting to redo the final CG scene since it didn't make too much sense..

anywho.. see what you think... I have included the old one as well for comparison..

note: the reason I redid the scene is cause it is supposed to be taking place at night not during the day.

Okay, I'll hit this up!

What program did you use to animate the grass? 3dstudio max? Whats up with the smiley face? It looks good, what ever it is.

The animation would be better if it were the "smiley holding beer." Maybe a female smiley face for the little guy. Kind of weird to have a smiley face sitting there all alone under moonlight. Give him a bone.

It looks great. The camera move translation is very linear so it feels a little abrupt. Have you tried an ease in/out curve for translation?

Actually, after watching it a few more times it does appear more fluid. I guess for me the only part that seems a bit rough is the camera transition zooming into the grass and the tilt up, then suddenly begining to track. That quick segment felt a little too linear.

Good job though.

I agree the camera moves are a bit stilted..

I haven't yet figured out how to get the camera to lock onto a subject as it moves.. or have it follow a Bezier Path Curve..

Also, the files are running at half their frame rates... just did it to save space on the upload... so that adds a bit to the jerkiness of it..

I am still playing around.. I am going to try and get some smoother motion.

Thanks for the feedback on it.

hey man, the grass looks great...very nice movement to it. the are rendered very well too.

the camera animation needs some work though. the deceleration when you tilt up to the face is too abrupt. also the midpoint of the arc in the move as you are swinging around to the back of the face has some acceleration issues. it looks like you are hitting your keyframes at the midpoint but are easing-in slow then easing out quickly...you just need to mess with the keys.

when you get a little more advanced you will want to start making a hiearchy of nulls (locaters) that control a certain channel of the animation and only that channel. it will help in creating more complicated animation and you wont have to fight the animation so much...the heiarchy would look like this....but you can adjust it for your needs.

posZ_null
posX_null
posY_null
rotY_Pan_null
rotX_Tilt_nul
rotZ_Roll_null
Camera

also you can create a camera that has an interest...this way you can keep the camera pointed at something...and can move the interest around to have it look at other things. i think you will see it when you go to create>camera>something something....i dont have maya on this machine otherwise i would check...

peace dude
