Animation Presets

I'm a bit confused about how to apply the animation presets in 6.5. Seems like sometimes they take on a life of their own... working or not working, starting when ever they feel like it... etc.

Thoughts on how best to use them?

Thanks

PS -- are there any other presets out there on the web?
