animating a shape layer

hello,

haven't heard anything back yet over at videocopilot so thought i would try here. i have a shape layer that i need to 'reveal' as if being drawn on a surface starting from bottom to top. i have tried using some presets with no luck except a linear wipe almost does it but i am unable to control it enough (it 'wipes' too fast in other words and looks really un-organic).

i saw a tutorial over at videocopilot where Andrew Kramer animated his name in a graffiti style which is what i am going for but i have a shape and not text so it doesn't seem to work?

thanks

without showing let me try my best to simply put what i did and am looking for. i used the pen tool to draw a shape of a logo which is a shape layer. the shape is filled with 'color emboss' and 'cc glass'. i am looking to control just how the shape reveals itself over time (hence how a pencil draws on paper) the reason the linear wipe does not look organic is that it seems to be controlled by percentage and from 0% to about 48% nothing appears. when it gets to 49% and 50% half of the shape is there which is really fast. i need to slow it down and make it more gradual. hope that makes sense.
if it does not i will try and post an example.

thanks for the replies on this!

one way to approach this is a mask reveal; you can shape the mask to whatever you want, and animate using keyframes to whatever speed/tempo you want

the paint on or stroke effect are variations of mask reveals, I'm sure you've seen the all-too-common effects of "growing vines" and similar animations

Like PDR said, try using a mask instead of a shape layer. You can then use something like the stroke effect seen in the VideoCopilot tutorial you originally mentioned.

It doesn't matter if it's a shape layer, or text, or anything.

Just precompose your shape layer , so it (and all the effects applied to it) become 1 layer to AE, then do the mask reveal
