Animated Glow over a Still Image in Motion? (like Livetype)

I miss Livetype. I do not like having to do titling in Motion... That said, one of the simple, nice things about LiveType is you could take some of the effects it did to characters in text, and apply them to still images if you inserted them. An example was the Glow effect. With Motion, it distinguishes unforgivingly between text characters and other objects. Is there a way to simply have a glow travel across a .PNG image as though it were a text character?
 
I know I can apply the Glow filter in motion and keyframe it, etc. But back in Livetype, you just "Applied Glow" and Bob was your uncle.

Are all these extra steps and work necessary now?
