Angenieux Announced Anamorphic Zooms for NAB 2013

Well, announced an announcement. There have been anamorphic zooms in the past, but they have been neglected for the last two decades in my opinion. Good to see something new is coming, despite how far off and expensive it will be.

That's definitely good news no matter how expensive it will be. A good while back there was talk of Zeiss anamorphic primes also. Competition is always good, I'm sure to rent one of those!

Those are coming. Arri announced them further just recently. I heard rumors they are about 30,000 euros each... so that's $40k-$45k/pop. Basically Master Primes of Anamorphics and a little slower (I think t/1.9 or t/2)

Wow I didn't expect them to be that high but I guess they will set a new standard in anamorphic lenses.
Guess we'll just keep renting unless some of us wins a lottery lol. Ryan do you own any anamorphics?

I own one. A PL converted 50mm f/1.2 Lomo Anamorphic from the 1950's... bought it from a guy in Belarus. It's quite aweful until you stop down to a f/4-f/5.6 but it has some beautiful character. Makes for good artistic photos... could never use it for an actual film. Quality isn't that great. Maybe for a dream sequence or something.

I'm guessing this will be a rear mounted anamorphic lens (anamorphic element at the rear) so It won't flare or have oval bokeh?

Not sure. I'm assuming they will try to make the lens as accurate as possible, so you can likely assume distortion, flares, and other imperfections will be kept to a minimum. Bad news for those who like the really vintage anamorphic glass look.
