Andromeda Strain on A&E

Anybody watch?

It sucked. I only stuck it out for the first half-hour of Part 1. Rushed home from the gym to catch it. Totally disappointing.

Benjamin Bratt looked like a girl in his hazmat suit.

Dialogue was unbelievably lame.

Acting was spotty.

Pace was boring.

I've seen better effects from DVXuser short films.

Anyone else?

I really think that a dozen of the filmmakers I've seen enter the dvxuser fests could have done a better job.

And execs and analysts from conventional television wonders why we're not watching TV anymore! Some executive should be fired for greenlighting that script. The director was probably shackled with substandard material, but if he had any say, he let an awful lot of crap get through in that version I tried to watch on TV.

I liked the concept but was let down by the execution. The special effects were as good as i would expect for a cable television series. A&E would not get a multi million dollar effects budget, so it seems they hired the best they could do with what they had. It had some cool shots and the acting was as good as it could get with a lame script. Hell, it was a made for cable disaster/sci-fi film so I would not expect anything more than I saw. It's A&E people.

Then I don't see A&E staying in the dramatic TV business 10 years from now. They won't be able to attract audiences with the limitations you describe.

The cost of effects doesn't totally wash with me as an excuse, however. I could do a better job in After Effects to get the "dust-blood" coming out of the dead guy's arm, and I consider myself an "amateur" FX artist. To me that was a pivotal part of the original concept: the first reveal that the virus turns their blood to dust. I'd think that in 2008, they could have done something cool. Very Stargate SG-1. Similarly, better dialogue isn't more expensive. It's a "different writer" and probably a different director and A&E executive, that's all.

I'm only ranting because I think it's an example of how our expectations are changing (from old-world TV to new world media consumption). This A&E movie would have done well in 1990. I think it bodes well for new independent filmmakers of the future to bring us content that meets our expectations.

I agree. I was let down as well. Your rant is justified. I do think the effects house they used (which literally could have been a house) was not one they spent too much money on. And Better dialogue could be more expensive with a better script and A list actors. but your words are perfectly placed, your post was well paced and not boring. you should have written it. and I am NOT being sarcastic. I kud Hav Ritten dat betta.:kali:

I liked it. It was entertaining. The ending didn't work very well though and didn't feel like what they had done to beat the andromeda would work.

I love the original! Hard Science fiction populated by character actors, not movie stars. Neat Deep Focus cinematography. It's one of my faves.
