Andromeda opinions

Maybe the Powerbook has changed, but mine won't work when closed. It automatically goes to sleep. I've tried various settings to bypass the switch, but no dice.

This would seem to be a large flaw in the backpack idea.

Jon

Go to Reel-Stream for more support. All your questions has been answered already.

Sleep- There is a program to prevent the laptop from sleeping when closed.

Flaw solved.

Also...there is a clampmount if want to attach a laptop perse on your tripod for ease of use and if you place it on a dolly.

I'll go to EVS and personally check it out in the near future.

Rush...if you have that in let me know. And heads up that I'm coming.

The backpack will also be solved in the future and will keep you updated

From talking with Juan it doesn't sound like the HVX is an ideal candidate for a mod. At least not for a few years. He's managed to get the uncomrpessed DVX footage across a USB port but take a higher res chip and that's likely to be impossible and other means of outputting the footage cost more.

He seemed to think the XL2 was a better contender for a next mod project due to its higher res 16:9 footage.

Yes I agree Isaac,

I haven't read up on it...so I should do the research before I speak here...but I "think" it's the same chip. They just compress it differently. If so....Then the Andromeda will still yeild a better result.

Now...I'm going to do research on that statement...if panny have release info on the HVXchip?

Of course the HVX footage we only see is of the car...not a good first clip.

Please Jan...get us a better footage.

Jun, you're just never satisfied......

Hi Jun, we usually keep one in stock, but I am not sure. I am not at the office tomorrow, but just call and either Ramzi or Randy will check stock on it for you.

It's great that you can get an application to keep the powerbook awake while closed - it's just a matter of bypassing the reed switch (the switch that notices when the powerbook is closed) - or it's function of putting it to sleep.
But also realize - it is still very necessary to keep proper ventilation while it's in your backpack. I'd be very cautious asking it to handle huge video throughputs and processing them to disk while being stuffed closed inside a backpack without plans to have it ventilate. No reason to damage that 1.5k piece of equipment...

yeah, that tripod mount seems to be a viable option for this workflow. I also saw that Juan on his forums stated that he has used a 15 foot USB cord without any issues, so maybe a longer cord would work with the laptop stationed elsewhere ...

I absolutely agree with you. I have the plans to keep it ventilated. The only time I will place it in a backpack perse is if I use the Steadicam/Magiqcam or if I do hand-held with Cinetech HipCam.

It will be customize backpack. I won't say too much before I try it out. Something that is common knowledge of the powerbook and any laptop is that the bottom of the powerbook is where all the heat is generated. I'm going to have the bottom face "out" when it's on the backpak. So it will be expose to the air when I move around...which is also another plus.

Because when you use your laptop...how many of you move around to keep it cool...? None. And when you place your laptop on the table...the only areas that heat excape is on the table and the sides. I wouldn't say the top because that is where your hand is typing on the keyboard...and that usually doesn't get hot as the bottom...where the ventilation is important.

I think there is only one way to put the laptop in the backpack. And that is the bottom of the powerbook facing out and the USB connection facing up so it can be accessible. Personally, I think if you place it in a normal backpack with holes it it, it would do just fine. But I want something more sturdy and made to fit perfectly with a "12 powerbook".

Finally, for any of you who want to use a steadicam...I think it's great to place more weight in the back...because it can help counterbalance the camera in the front. Those of you who have use a steadicam know what I'm talking about.

And of course if I don't plan on being mobile...it would be place on the tripod for tracking shoots and static shoots and ventilation isn't the issue.

Of course...otherwise I'll never progress...

The day I'm satisified is the day that I am dead...but then again...I don't think dying is satisfying either...
