Andromeda HVX?

"The Andromeda upgrade along with the controlling SculptorHD software suite is scheduled at $3,000 USD."

So, on top of the price of the DVX at around $3k to begin with, you're spending $6k on a modified frankenstein camera will no Panasonic warranty, I'd just pay for a $5.6k HVX and have a camera in-tact and under warranty with a ton of features you can't get from a cannibalized DVX100.

Sorry, I don't see the price value of this modification...

Not to mention the total lack of technical info on the site, makes me suspicious. Yes, there's a flow chart, but I'm just not sold that they are actually delivering what they claim, in the way they "insinuate" they do it.

Wow, that's a rather unfair.
There's sound reasons that the Reel-Stream mod is worthwhile; plenty of users here are very satisfied with their modded DVX.

I've not heard from anyone who has had this mod done. And I stand my my financial investment statement. Why pay the price of an HVX for something that's not nearly that? Not to mention it only just released last month.

I'd love to hear from users who actually paid for this. Does it make the DVX as good as the HVX for almost the same money?

Unfair? I think all my views are valid and based on facts.

Again, if anyone has actually paid for this mod, I'd love to hear from them. In the users section of the site, there's only two users. I wonder if they work for the company or are using free beta versions? I think these are very valid concerns.

- Price is $2500 for the Andromeda mod and SculptorHD (OS-X). For someone who already has a DVX, that's a neat way to get 4:4:4, uncompressed.
- S'been officially out since Jan 2006

The only thing that freak me out about the andromeda... Is that when I look at some footage... It looks kinda like a squeez mode... I dunno why, I'm hoping its just my eyes, but I have a feeling its not...

Andromeda's been out for a long time, I know that some DVXUsers have it, I believe Obin is one.

I don't really see the appeal of the Andromeda for the DVX but I think it's a total no-brainer and rousing success for the HVX. Andromeda for the DVX brings it up to the caliber of, say, an XHA1 (i.e., a 24fps HD camcorder shooting around 4:2:0). But I don't see why someone would sink an extra $2500 into the DVX unless they really needed 4:4:4 SD keying (which can be accomplished with an HVX or XHA1 anyway). So where I see the Andromeda having massive success would be in modding the HVX. HVX buyers are much more likely to sink an extra $2500 into their camera than DVX buyers, and you'd get true uncompressed 1920x1080@4:2:2 at variable frame rates. 1080/60p, or 1080/54p or 1080/4p or anything inbetween. I can't think of too many HVX owners who wouldn't be interested in that!

Yeah, but aren't you tethered to a laptop running the software?

That only appeals to a studio config don't you think. Most of us are adjusting to longer setup times with our 35mm adapters but then top it off with a laptop attached at the hip.

If you do serious green screen work, I could see a use for it.

But again you have te warrantee issues.

No offense, but not a single one of your points is based on fact. You're wrong on every count.

Here you go: Andromeda is a modification to the dvx that allows it to capture uncompressed 4:4:4 images via usb to a mac with their proprietary capture software, Sculpture HD. The image size is 1540 x 990, so you're beyond 720 and just shy of 1080.

The price, as listed on their website and as announced here on dvxuser, was lowered to $2500 a few months ago. An educational discount for students brings it down to $2000.

There are several Andromeda users that have posted work here and many screenshots and clips on the reel-stream site. It's a little bit (ok, a lot) untoward to suggest that Juan and his team are misrepresenting themselves or that they can't deliver what they suggest.

You say there are only two users - there are actually 393 users in the reel-stream forums. The owners and engineers behind the company make themselves clearly known and are quick to answer questions.

You might want to check out the site again. All of the info I just presented is available to anyone. You shouldn't knock the company and their product (both of which are totally solid) without actually looking into it at all.

Has anyone seen this technology in effect? Does it work as good as its advertisements claim?

I have an older dvx100 that would not mind using for a ginnypig.

Have you had your DVX converted?

I take it that you have used this product based on your passionate response.

I am curious to hear from some actual users of the product. I have read the specs and promotional notes of the upgrade and software but still would like to hear from someone who has it.

Thanks

Nope, never used it. I would definitely have mentioned that. Everything I said is just common knowledge available to anyone willing to do the research.

As for talking to actual users, I would definitely recommend you reading the posts in the reel-stream forums and asking around there if you want a higher concentration of people with hands on experience.

But there are a few Andromeda users here, namely, Obin, Matthew Bennett and Virum. They might chime in on their experiences, but I'd do a search for past posts because I know they've talked about it quite a bit before.

I would certainly be interested in an Andromeda for the HVX, but only if the capture software didn't run exclusively on a MAC. I'd (obviously) rather have software than runs under Linux, but I'd settle for a Windows version if necessary, as long as it would run on Win2k.

As for the DVX, I can understand the reasoning behind getting the mod done when it first came out-- after all, at the time the HVX was out of stock almost everywhere and P2 was twice as expensive. But now? The HVX beats the Andromeda mod hands down.

I don't really think the Andromeda and the HVX are for the same user. There are significant pros and cons to either system depending on the application.

They both have a legitimate place in the market.
