And the next Spielberg is...?

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

There's got to be somebody out there that can maintain that sweet beard and baseball cap aloofness.

everything that has to do with his filmmaking and the films he did.
Doing films in all kinds of genres.

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

I would say Peter Jackson.

It would be hard to mention a Director who has risen more dramatically.

If you have seen Heavenly Creatures then you know he is equally adept at drama as well as blockbusters and with King Kong on the horizon his future is looking very bright.

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

A lot of people are saying that Sam Mendes is the next Spielberg.. I disagree.

My pick...

Stephen Daldry
Peter Jackson

ditto  ;D

Lots of pressure on him to pull the King Kong remake off. Even if it's a flop however, he currently has my vote.

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

Im pretty impressed with PJ so far. Whwther it be his old school B movies or the current crop; great stuff. I remember seeing the FRIGHTENERS for the first time and thinking: WTF is this? This is great!

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

I don't think Jackson, but that's only because he seems (at least from what I've seen) to not have the charisma that Speilberg has - and his stuff is much more 'culty' than Spielbergs IMO...

Maybe Barry Green...?  ;D

haha, I do gotta agree with this statement

Peter Jackson is doing pretty well though

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

I'd go with PJ.

Or, call me crazy, but Sam Raimi might be comin' up.

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

I gotta agree with TC there... Sam Raimi is definitely a huge up and comer when it comes to successful blockbusters...

Lets not forget though that he's produced Xena and Hercules two of the highest rated shows in history. At one point Xena was the most popular show in the world. Then he comes out with Spider-man and Spider-man 2

The man is on a roll... to get a good idea of how equal peter jackson and sam raimi are, look at where spidey is on the top grossing films of all time and look at where the lord of the rings movies are. Another thing, look at who has more movies above those than anyone else... it so happens to be Mr. Spielburg... paritially because Shrek 2 is up there and that's dreamworks...

I would say Raimi over Jackson though... Jackson has the beard going, but Raimi's got more charisma than Jackson. Raimi is also becoming a far more household name when it comes to movies. Although, Jackson is also becoming quite the household name... hmmm... it's hard to tell... we'll see how king kong turns out and judge from there... Raimi's got more experience and success under his belt though, so my bet is on him...

I get a kick out of following Raimi for years... WAY before he was ever chosen to make Spidey... then when he was chosen I was like "AWESOME" then when he made gajillions of dollars on Spidey i was like "SUPER AWESOME"

I swear, that guy's my idol. He goes from making campy horror films with his buddy's in highschool to directing 2 of the highest grossing films of all time...

Yeah, but wasn't Baywatch also the most popular show in the world for a while? If popularity were any measure of lasting ability, we'd all be talking about the Baywatch Nights 2 feature film right now.

Sam Raimi has been very spotty over his career, imho.

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

But what has Peter Jackson done other than Lord of the Rings? Most people haven't even seen anything else he's done...

Re: And the next Spielberg is...?

Peter Jackson,
Night Shyamalan(despite his last movie)
and
David Fincher

Run to the video store and get his first two: "Bad Taste" and "Dead Alive" (or "Brain Dead", it goes by both titles).  Bad Taste is a completely low-budget homemade production, his first film, and it is in quite bad taste.  Dead Alive is an absolute masterpiece, in many ways it's kind of a remake of Bad Taste, but Dead Alive is a complete classic.  I'd say watch "Dead Alive" first...
