anamorphic

I would like to get a anamorphic widescreen look to my film. Is this something I do in editing (Vegas Pro 12) or does it come down to the camera and lens to achieve this look?

It should start in the camera. You can buy anamorphic adaptors which will give you a true anamorphic look, or you can crop in post. If you opt for the crop, be sure to film keeping that in mind. Many cameras now let you display "cropmarks" so you're framing for anamorphic and not 16:9. I will usually edit with a 2.40 overlay applied to a top track in Avid (works in Vegas too). When I export, if I'm working with full HD, I will set my frame size to 1920x816 or 1920x805. Don't render your video with the overlay. Just don't. The various viewing outlets will add a letterbox if needed. This goes for DVD, Blu-Ray, web, doesn't matter.
