I need some help to understand the difference between using the squeeze mode and using the anamorphic adapter.... there is a real loss in resolution with the squeeze?
thank you very much

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

Squeeze will simply place black bars on the top and bottom of the picture, but the anamorphic adapter will add extra image on the left and right side, making it wider.

When you watch a 16:9 or 2.35:1 widescreen picture on a 4:3 TV, the black bars come from the image being fit into the TV with the same length to width ratio rather than chopping off the sides with the PAN and SCAN method.

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

has anyone done some sort of comparison between the anamorphic adapter v the digital squeeze? I'm definatley shooting my next piece 16:9, but im having a little trouble justifying the 800 bucks for the adapter
thanks

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

So can I plsa sk the experts . . . What is the resultant 35mm equivalent maximum wide angle you get with the 16:9 adapter. I know the camera sees about 32mm (equiv) . . . what does the adapter take it down to, a 28mm? Is it any good for interiors and also any pics anyone to help with this would be appriciated. My dad is in Tokyo . . . I am hoping on getting one cheaper than they cost here. :-/

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

The adapter provides a 33% wider image, so you're talking a field of view that's about equivalent to a 21mm lens on a 35mm still-photo camera.

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

Not specifically, but you can see basically what the difference would be on your own DVX. Zoom to about Z17, and take a still -- that's what your shot would look like with no adapter. Then zoom out to Z00 and put your camera in "letterbox" mode, and that's what the same shot from the same position would look like (field-of-view-wise) if you had the anamorphic adapter installed.

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

Clever! I like the logic.

I will try it out, but my adapter is on the way never the less!!! I am so excited as it will be here on sunday! ;D ;D ;D

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

Hi Theos,
Congratulation!
I am waiting for your comment on the adapter! Plus few questions If you have few minuts......
There is a loss in the automatic focusing at max zoom?
Does the lens shake reduction system work still with the adaptor on?
And very last, it will ever mount a matt box?
Enjoy the arrival!!!!
Thank you in advance.

Yes.  You can't use autofocus with the anamorphic adapter, especially at the telephoto side of the lens.

Does the lens shake reduction system work still with the adaptor on?
The manual recommends to turn off image stabilization when the adapter is attached.

And very last, it will ever mount a matt box?
You can use a large Arri 6x6 matte box with it, or Chrosziel makes one that you can adapt the lens to fit (by shaving off most of the lens hood).

Re: Anamorphic Squeeze .... or Panasonic Adapter?

Wow, having great fun with the lens, its 16:9 is great but the wide angle it gives is also very impressive. Barry, wasnt there also some talk about using the extra big matte blox shade as an option that would fit the adapter. & if so  . . . any idea on how filters work with that?

By the way I am having a tough time getting the darn thing on & off. Mann thats frustrating!

Any Tutorials? ???

Thumbs up on Panasonic Adapter!

Thumbs up on Panasonic Adapter!

Greetings fellow DX100 (and DX100A) lovers.

Just spent the day doing test shots with and without the Panasonic 16:9 anamorphic adapter. Here's what I found out....

Auto focus will work with the adapter about as well as it does with the progressive modes, which means it does work, but it's often slow. I could not see any difference between using the Optical Stabilizer and shutting it off. Since I plan on only using the camera on a tripod, it's really a moot point, but I was still curious.

Close focus with the adapter on is a bit problematic. Panasonic claims three meters or about six feet at full telephoto. Personally, I found that the camera delivered plenty of detail in close ups using the onboard squeeze mode, however wide shots are decidedly soft, so I will definitely use the adapter for everything but tight close-ups.

With full zoom out, I saw no vignetting on my HD monitor using the adapter, so I'm thrilled, as I love super wide shots and had feared the murky edges.

I ended up buying the adapter on eBay (won it in the very last 60 seconds), but to be honest, now that I have seen it in action, I would have no problem buying it new with warranty. It's worth every penny when I know I am getting all the image quality the DX100A can deliver. I was a tad bummed after my first outing using the squeeze mode at wide angle settings, but this lens makes a huge difference. I'm viewing images on a Toshiba 42-inch high-definition monitor, so my opinions are based on that.

Hope that helps a few of you out!
Jim
