anamorphic lens how?!?

It is neither of those choices (in the exact definition) as it is not spherical. It accepts a much larger horizontal AoV, which is speezed onto the otherwise 'normal' film or digital plane. With the exception to the anamorphic element, the rest of the lens assembly is somewhat similar to a spherical lens build.

You question about optical glass 'shape' is a good one. There are probably different ways to do it, but from my experience, have seen the anamorphic lens element first in the order of the lens assembly (working toward camera). It is horizontally curved twice the value of the vertical curvature. Therefore, from what I can tell, it's not either of those choices you offered although it is similar to a convex lens only in the horizontal effect. Since I have never taken one appart, I don't know if the back side is convex or etc. It could be a variable of meniscus... again I don't know. What I do know is that it is unlike spherical lens elements as it disproportionately effects the vertical and horizontal aspect ratio/ AoV.

By the way, anamorphic camera lenses are more complicated and more expensive then ones for projection lenses. If you find information on anamorphic projection lenses, do not think it translates into cinema lens construction.

I hope I made some sense. I honestly have no idea the typical anamorphic lens shape as I have never seen its backside and do not specialize in lens element optics.

PS: I really doubt you will find someone here who has taken one apart, unless they do it for a living. Those suckers are a specialty item and very expensive! I'm very interested now, so I'll ask around work come monday and someone will help me understand. I'll pass it on to you.

Some interesting reading material:

I shoulda clarified.... i ment anamorphic adapters like the panasonic DVX version.

I think centry optics makes one to. The DVX anamorphic lens looks simply made. Its liek 2 pieces of bent glass? One looks like a plano convex lens and the other is concave maybe?!?
