Anamorphic and Matte box

I am considering getting a anamorphic lens sometime in the near future which for me means I am going to have to get a new Matte Box. I currently have the Cavision 4x4 Hard shade box. Now I remember reading that there is only one box on the market now that you can still utilize the anamorphic adapter. Is that the high priced Chrosziel?

Also just so I am clear, the Anamorphic adapter is something different than the .6x adapter or .7x Wide angle converter lens correct?

Re: Anamorphic and Matte box

Yes, the high priced Chrosziel is the only one out now. You have to shave the adapter sun shade down to 1mm though. Also you are correct regarding the .6x and .7x lenses.

They're quite different. The anamorphic adapter converts your camera to becoming a native 16:9 camera.

The .6 and .7 just give your 4:3 camera a wider field of view.

*I* understand what you're saying there, Barry, but isn't that a bit misleading for someone who's just learning the terms?

Re: Anamorphic and Matte box

Depends on the definition of "native"... if we allow that the PDX10 and the XL2 can call themselves "native" because they deliver full resolution to the full 16:9 frame, then no, it's not misleading at all.

The old definition of "it has a 16:9-shaped CCD" doesn't directly apply anymore in the face of 4:3 cameras that get full-frame resolution in 16:9 mode. I've gone back and forth on the idea of whether that qualifies as "native 16:9" and I'm finally decided that "a difference that makes no difference IS no difference" and they qualify as native 16:9. Therefore, the DVX with anamorphic gets a full 720x480 16:9 image, and also qualifies as native 16:9.
