I just got the DVX100A. Does the SQUEEZE mode pretty much replace the need for the Anamorphic adaptor?

Do you get better picture quality with either? Any other pros and cons.

Appreciate the help

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

Squeeze is an alternative to the anamorphic. Squeeze gets you about 350 lines of resolution, the anamorphic gives you about 480 lines plus about a 33% wider field of view. Squeeze lets you use filters, matteboxes, and other lens accessories (like wide-angle and telephoto lenses) but the anamorphic doesn't.

In short, shooting with the anamorphic involves making some compromises, but the one place it doesn't compromise on is resolution: it's king. Shooting with squeeze means you only have to make ONE compromise: resolution. In all other ways it's probably preferable to using the anamorphic, but as for high-res, the anamorphic can be much higher (about 33% higher) than squeeze mode.

But then again, squeeze is free, whereas the anamorphic is around $850. So the choice is yours...

Thanks Barry.

Why does the SQUEEZE mode only give 350 lines? That sounds the same as masking top and bottom via the in-camera 16X9 setting.

I was hoping the squeeze mode gives you 480 lines but within a smaller vertical space.

aaack...Scan lines...different from DPI...my bad

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

Take that "Ack" back...shouldnt the squeeze give you 480 lines?

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

Barry i own your guide, as stated Letterbox is around 380
lines, squeeze is around 350 and the master anamorphic is around 540 lines. Accurate figures?

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

According to the resolution charts I shot, that's about what the resolution looks like.

Keep in mind that Squeeze is basically the same thing as letterbox except that they digitally stretch the masked image to make it widescreen-shaped. So you won't have more res than letterbox, you'll actually have a bit less (due to the stretching process) but at least in squeeze mode it's widescreen-shaped and suitable for display on a 16x9 TV.

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

Barry i understand the Squeeze process thanks. I was refering to anamorphic capture is it 540 or 480 lines? In the guide it seems the resolution is between 520-540.

Re: Anamorphic adaptor for the 100A

Depends on if you're talking TV Lines (which is what the res chart show) or Pixels. For TV Lines, it's approximately 540. For pixels it's 480.
