What is an anamorphic adapter and what does it do?

This link shows an anamorphic adapter with an image on the right side that sort of explains what it does. This one shown will NOT fit the DVX.

So it all it does is convert the video to fit a widescreen tv?

In a nutshell, yes. It allows you to create "true" widescreen videos, not 4:3 videos that are letterboxed with bars at the top & bottom. The DVXa has a feature built-in called Squeeze mode that does sort of the same thing. If you have a DVX, I'd recommend Barry's book if you do not already have it. He does an excellent job in the book and DVD of explaining the advantages/disadvantages of both ways....
