Anamorphic adapter vs. wide angle lens

I have a Cavision Broadcast wide anngle lens, BWA06X72II. It came as part of a package for another camera. I had a wide angle telephoto lens so I never used it. I found out that it fits the DVX100A and I've used it to see how wide a shot it gives me. I was wondering if I could use this lens to duplicate the effect an anamorphic adapter does on the DVX for 16X9. In other words is there a way, in squeeze mode or letterbox, where I could get an image that approaches the one I get from the adapter. I understand from reading Barry's book that when I use squeeze mode I loose resolution etc. Also, when would you typically use this lens?

Re: Anamorphic adapter vs. wide angle lens

Not sure what you mean by wide angle telephoto. The two terms are opposites :)

That said, a wide angle lens will give you a wider field of view like the anamorphic but it will not give you a horizontally compressed image. This is because the wide angle widens both the horizontal and vertical axis whereas the anamorphic only affects the horizontal. If you wanted to use the wide angle and get a widescreen look you would have to shoot squeeze mode or letterbox in addition to the adapter - both of which loose resolution.

Thanks for the information. The lens is the Canon 3X for the XL1S. It is wide angle and can be zoomed.

Ah yes. Nice little lens from what I hear. Century makes an anamorphic which should work with the Xl1/2 if you are interested.
