Analog (VHS) to Digital Transfer help

What is the cheapest way to transfer an old VHS tape onto my Mac G4 for editing in FCP. My MiniDV cam, that I used to use, is out of commission. Is there another [cheap] way to simply digitize the signal and send it into the computer?

Thanks!

Re: Analog (VHS) to Digital Transfer help

A cheap catpure card might do it. you can find some on eBay for $20-$50. Some have breakout boxes with inputs, others are just a USB device with RCA inputs. Type in "video capture" on ebay and see what comes up.

If you need it right now then goto your local computer shop. They'll have something. But you'll pay more.

Good luck!

Re: Analog (VHS) to Digital Transfer help

When you say your DV cam is out of commission, do you mean it won't record? Or is it totally shot?

Now, I'm not 100% sure you can do this in FCP, but if you can live capture from the cam, you should still be able to use it as long it still feeds in through the A/V and out through the firewire.

But then, if it's totally gone, this doesn't help much.

Re: Analog (VHS) to Digital Transfer help

I believe a company called "dazzle" makes a pretty low end analog-dv capture device...You can find them anywhere from Best buy to Fred meyers (at least in portland....) and they cost around 40-50 dollars. Once you get it digitized you can do just about anything with it. Canopus also makes some higher end breakout boxes that connect with firewire, and allow bi-directional transfer (ie: Analog to digital, and digital to analog) which is handy for doing full screen preview when editing (firewire out, converts to RCA, RCA to monitor). You're looking at 2-300 dollars for that though....
