Analog/Digital conversion; lack of timecode; FCP 5 complains

I'm trying to do a conversion between a VHS source and my external hard drive using the Canon HV20. (I've posted this on the HV20 forums as well.) I'd like to capture the source straight through to the hard drive with the HV20 acting as a node. The HV20's manual allows for this kind of thing, and I've tried setting it up.

The problem I get is, when I use the Log and Capture window, FCP 5 complains that it can't capture without a timecode, because the conversion apparently doesn't generate one. The work around I'm using is to record everything to miniDV and capture from there, but this can become problematic when recording a 2 hour VHS tape which would require me to either have 4 miniDVs handy or constantly go back and forth between capturing and recording.

Is there a way to capture without timecode? Or, if you're familiar with the HV20, is there a way to make the HV20 generate timecode (or fake it somehow) so FCP doesn't complain?

The setup I'd like is: VCR -> HV20 -> Laptop -> External harddrive. The setup I have is: VCR -> HV20 -> MiniDV, MiniDV -> HV20 -> Laptop (FCP 5) -> External harddrive.

Must turn off device control... set it to non-controllable device

The other way is to convert the VHS material to tape with the HV20... thus adding timecode.
