An rare application problem

Ok, here's a new one.

I'm applying to college now, all the biggies; NYU, USC, UCLA, Yada yada

during this whole process my uncle makes a comment about making my application stand out by sending it in a film can. I'm pretty sure he was joking.

the problem is, my mother wasn't so sure, and is now pressing me to actually send my applications in film cans.

I personally see a lot of problems arising with this course of action, not the least of which would be some guy in the filing office thinking it was a submission of work and tossing it away immediately. This all wraps into my theory that to prevent me from moving so far away, my mother is trying to sabotage my college applications. Yeah, effed up.

thoughts? maybe a better way to make an application stand out, sans the drama?

I don't have any suggestions for making your application stand out but I might be able to help your argument with your mother for why not to send it in a film can.

Since 9/11 large organization and universities scan letters and packages differently. If you send your submission in a film can, not only is it cliche, but it will actually slow the process down while they try to figure out what's in it.

you definetly want to stand out, but a film can? how about a chocolate bunny? or gift wrapped? with a pink bow! maybe that would be a little too much...

How about sending a full DVD of your work and a personal video message to the school with your application. Someone will watch it. Columbia has a file on me that has everything I ever sent them I was amazed when they pulled this file and I saw what was included. You should send one to Columbia College out here in Chicago if you want to do filmmaking. That's where I graduated from and it's got everything. If you have your own camera you're ahead of the game.
