An open letter to the Insomnia Fest organization...

"Recently the much-delayed Insomnia Fest gallery became "active". However, as I'm sure you're all aware by now, it is still rife with problems.

Firstly, it is extremely disorganized in terms of movie selection. The only ways to find a specific film are to either know the title or hope that it's one of the 6 featured on the main page. Some search parameters would have been a nice addition. By allowing users to search by User, Genre, Run-time or any other amount of parameters, it would be much easier to find a film to watch.

In addition, the films are often extremely slow to load, if they do at all. Some movies open fine within 30 seconds of loading their page, but others take 5 or 6 refreshes to load. I feel that this very unfair to the filmmakers, especially considering how short people's attention spans are when browsing the internet. I'm sure plenty of great films have gone unwatched because the viewer didn't feel like waiting 5 whole minutes to watch a movie half that short.

Finally, and most importantly, registering for an Apple ID is convoluted at best. I've had two friends already complain to me that when they tried to register, they were told they had already voted for the film. I don't know how this is even possible! Some of my friends were able to register, only to discover that they could no longer get back to the page with the movie they wanted to vote for.

I understand that the turnout for this festival may be above what Apple was prepared for, but as a participant and viewer in Apple's Insomnia Fest, I feel that neither camp will be satisfied with their experience with the website or the festival as a whole.

I spent a great deal of time preparing my entry, just as many others did. This shoddy, slap-dash treatment of their work is tantamount to a slap in the face to the filmmakers. Please remedy the problem soon, so I can finally tell my friends and family that the voting process is finally the painless process it should be.

Thank you for your time, Carleton Torpin.

Perhaps I'm the only one who had any of the above-mentioned problems, but I think it's a real shame that we as filmmakers put our hard work and time into these projects only to be given the virtual shaft when it comes to Apple's presentation of them. If anybody else has something to say to Apple, now's the time. I sent the above message to the Contact Us link at Apple, but I seriously doubt it'll do any good. :(

Yeah, thats been my experience with some others as well. I've been involved in two contests run by NBC/Universal and both were a disaster in terms of basic organization. In the last one, they told me I was a finalist, then wrote back 5 min later to say they were sorry, I was NOT a finalist. Just really incompetent ****.

I am about to enter a YouTube and MySpace contests and hope the fact that those are primarily internet companies will make them more savvy about running something on the web.
