an extremely basic question re: importing

hello...I have had my dvx for awhile now, as have I had vegas, but only today have I decided to try to import anything...i have what I believe is a firewire cable (the box did not specifically say 'firewire' but it is a 4 to 4 pin ieee 1394 cable)...i got this at radio shack! anyway....i have searched around on these boards, but to no avail...I just need to know what I am doing wrong.

so. first. my camera is off, i then plug in the firewire cable, then turn on the camera, then i plug the cable into the computer, as is procedure, i understand. computer recognizes connection. i open vegas 6, and select 'file' -- 'import' -- 'media', i then select 'pansonic dv camera'...so far, so good...BUT THEN, nothing. just a blank window, with nothing to select to open....What am I not doing that I need to be doing?? Tape is in the camera, in the 'saved' position, I even went so far as to switch from 'camera' to 'vcr, then I selected 'menu' and then selected 'av in/out setup', and then switched from 'off' to 'on' on the 'dv out' option. but nope, no change. What am I not doing that is completely obvious to everyone else but me?? I apologize as I realize this has likely been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find my answer....so I post this. I do appreciate yr help.

Not Import | Media

Right underneath is Capture Video. That's what you need. It'll start the capture program and transfer the footage from the DVX.

thanks for the response. so i selected 'capture video' then in the 'capture video' window' i click the red 'capture video' button and after about a minute and a half, i then select 'play' to see what has been imported, but all i see is a black screen...and i'm pretty sure i didn't record complete darkness...so, hmmm...

ok..so I figured out my problem, i hadn't switched from 'camera' to 'vcr' this latest time....is there any way to import the video any quicker, rather than in real time? also, why is it called 'capture' rather than 'import', as the video has already been captured. i suppose i'm 'capturing' the video in vegas, but i'm importing it, really...right? thanks again!

one more thing: it is the consensus that it would be best to buy a cheap camera to transfer all this video from tape to the nle, right?? the reasoning is that it lessens the strain on the heads, no? once again, thanks!

Noe. Realtime is the best you're gonna get. (I don't think there's anything out there to do it quicker...and it wouldn't be worth the money if there were.)

It's "capture" because...um...er... Well, I guess because you could just capture live from the camera, too. I think.

Head-wear, to some extent. But you'd probably be ready to get new camera by the time they actually wore out, capturing or not. I'd be more concerned about the whole firewire thing. I'd rather blow the port on a $300 camera than a $3000 one.
