An Examination of: The Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 T2.9

About time!

I do slightly disagree that the Mini-S4's are that different from S4/i's, however, or that the Cabrio is 'smooth' in the same sense as Cooke. I've found the Cabrio to be naturally neutral but not tack-sharp that your eye's bleed.

I do agree with just about anything else.

Macro mode, isn't macro, as it's really just giving the zoom lens a Close Focus ability that cine primes typically have. It's not macro photography as we come to know it.

Other than that, the lens is a killer one-lens solution that gets it done. Can't ask for much more on most jobs.

I havet used Macro yet. I refuse to touch the back focus. :)

I've actually gotten complaints from my colorist that the image is so sharp hes spending too much time softening the skin. I've been using a 1/8th Holly Wood Black magic filter to compensate.

This really kicks in at T5.6 @ a 2.9 it is noticeably softer, but still plenty sharp.

What do you mean? Although similar in process, macro and backfocus are two different functions/knobs on the cabrio. Don't mess with backfocus, but you should have fun with the macro lever. :)

Great review - thanks Timur! I really enjoyed reading it.

BTW I had no idea RED even worked with LDS at all (thought they were /i only for some reason). So that is encouraging that they are working on it. Learn something new every day!

I always wondered why they are called "Cabrio" - in Germany a Cabrio is a convertible car.

I think that's actually why they called it Cabrio.

Some kind of sporty convertible car?

EG the small, light, maneuverable member of the Fujinon zoom family?

OR maybe because you can add / remove the power zoom and "convert" it between ENG-like mode and cinema mode?

We'll leave out the thoughts that the convertibles are sometimes heavier :)

I am not going to speak for Timur, but it seems he is using the term 'LDS' interchangeably for either ARRI LDS or the i/tech lens data system.

As far as i know, and i could be 100% wrong, but i believe Red does NOT support arri LDS and does not have plans to. In fact ive heard from the arri canp, that they are going to fully support i/tech too going forward, possibly threatening the point and future of ARRI LDS. time shall tell. The cabrio can be both LDS and i/tech. The lens has both sets of pins (12:00 and 3:00) and red is currently working to enable their i/tech pins to put out the correct voltage.

If red were to support ARRI LDS, they would need to release a new TI PL mount with pins also at 3:00 and a firmware update. Considering they can't seem to ever get i/tech to work properly, I doubt they are tackling this as well, but in an ideal world they would have both working.

the cabrio series is named cabrio after a convertible due to how the servo grip can be removed easily and purposefully... Like the top of a convertible. Plus, like most convertibles, the cabrio is small and light.

The issue being the pins dont put out the correct "standard" voltage, because they are ment to "read" not "write" and the Cabrio interprets that voltage as "ultra slow iris rack to T5.6"... And hence you get iris creep.
