An Actual Discussion of the 83rd Academy Awards

It was a no-surprise, no big-upset Oscar night. So glad I live in California it's the only award show I can watch LIVE.

Yeah, this is my first year in L.A. It's so weird to watch the Academy Awards at 5:30 and know they're just a couple of miles from my apartment.

Kind of lame that Corey Haim didn't get a nod in the In Memorium. I know he was no acting giant, but he was a bigger part of my childhood than Lena Horne. How hard would it have been to throw his face up there for two seconds.

Inception maybe deserved the win for cinematography but I'm so glad the Academy didn't jump on the adolescent "AHMG INCEPTION BLEW MY MIND AHMG" bandwagon and give it any of the big awards.

Agreed. A big Oscar blunder in my book.

I was underwhelmed this year by the Nominees, the presenters, the hosts and the entire show.

Yeah didn't dig the hosts. Anne Hathaway was trying way too hard.

As far as the winners go, I was pretty satisfied. No big upsets. I guessed over 75% of them correctly, but I didn't see the King's Speech yet, so I couldn't gauge that one.

I had Restrpo picked for documentary. Loved that one.

As much as I love Roger Deakins, I'm glad he didn't win. True Grit wasn't shot as well as Inception, or many of his other films for that matter.

I thought all the performance Oscars were spot on, as well as music and sound. The chick in Winter's Bone was pretty incredible too. The Social Network score was much more subtle than Inception, but I think it made a bigger impact to the film.

No Daft Punk or special effects nominations for Tron?

I still think 10 best picture noms is too many. True Grit wasn't that good. It was almost exactly like the old one, bit with better acting, set design, and atmosphere. A lot of build up for a little fizzle at the end. I thought they should have kept going. Not the Coens' best work. I wouldn't have had a problem with Nolan being nominated for director though.

King's Speech is excellent and IMO Geoffrey Rush is the stand out of the film. It is not the kind of film it looks like from viewing trailers...it's actually incredibly funny and the pace ticks right along.

FTR... my only inception win prediction was for cinematography, nothing else. A guy saying it made him think and he thought about it the next day isn't saying it blew his mind. I thought the score for inception was innovative as well... within that context.

I expected Social to get the win for adapted screenplay... but not much else.

Rush was awesome in Speech... as he is awesome in everything he does, but Firth was transcendent (as was Bale in Fighter.)

Acting as an interesting character with an emotionally crippling stutter that constantly sounds genuine... and having that character, as well as his stutter, and a whole interesting story of interesting characters... following a good story-arc, within a beautiful period piece... IMO that's why it went down the way it did.

I would have said it blew my mind, but, well, luckily my mind was able to handle it ;) But metaphorically speaking, yeah, it blew my mind, and yes, I thought it was that good. It's in my top 5 movies EVER, but that's just my opinion.

So if that is "adolescent", so be it. In other news, I'm gonna go put my headgear on, pop on some Beiber, and see if I can't make out what that scrambled picture is on TV. ;)

I think it goes to say that Portman was a shoo-in for best actress but I was kind of bummed that jennifer lawrence didn't get it. Winters Bone is an amazing film that didn't get much buzz.

I liked inception, maybe is that I'm into long films...hey, after all, I like angels and demons..... But jokes aside, I found something engaging and different in inception, a different view of the paradigm of reality... are we a illusion of someone that is sleeping? maybe a minute in his real time is like 10.000 years in his dreams.....His telephone might ring and voila we all disappear as fast as we were created in his mind.....
Other than that, I also found the social network engaging, I think that Fincher managed to make a business story into something entertaining (at least for me...)

What Inception did was bring some of the oldest (almost cliche now) philosophical questions into a Hollywood blockbuster with lots of effects. I suppose it's notable for that. [my opinion]

Finally saw King's Speech. Loved it! Very powerful film.

It's so hard to compare films like Inception, Toy Story 3 and King's Speech. I find it much easier to compare acting, sound, etc...
Best Picture is a toss up at times.

Liked all the wins except for Tom Hooper - nothing against him, just I thought and wanted David Fincher to win. Though I did enjoy the king's speech.
The social network for best score was my favorite win - mostly because the way the scoring was done and the "type" of music it was is pretty much what I do on my short films (get my composer to play "sounds" on keyboards/guitars then I layer them up and make "songs", like trent and atticus ross did). Also I think it elevated the movie to a whole new (and better) level then Zimmer's on inception - I believe inception would've been as great as it was with even a more typical hollywood zimmer score, but social network would've gone way down (in my opinion) with a more "regular" score.

Also, it's not just that "3 note" song, infact that was one of the least favorite of mine. It's the music during the whole "facesmash" creation part, or that meeting with sean parker (called "magnetic" on the soundtrack) and of course the popular remix of "in the hall of the mountain king", also the music over the semi-montage of Zuckerberg snubbing the winklevii (forgot what that song was called....it's the scene when we see eduardo also auditioning to get into the pheonix). Anyway, inceptions score's great too - I have most of it downloaded off itunes.
I think in the end, to me TSN winning score is like a make-up victory for when they snubbed There Will Be Blood's score which in ways was similarly odd and not the kind of thing people generally think of when they think "movie music".

TSN editing was deserved, I would've picked inception but it wasn't nominated (most odd snub in any category ever). Just re-watch how they cut back and forth from the deposition rooms (social network), and the segments when he creates face smash, to name a couple. For a movie with mostly just with kids sitting in chairs talking in fairly plain rooms, it goes by pretty quick and smoothly.

Wanted Roger Deakins to win Cinematography, but mostly just because he's pretmy favorite DP alive when it comes to that category. He has done better work, though I think True Grit still looks amazing (the scene in the cottenwood forest with the hanging man, the colors in the tent/rain scene (blue rain background, orange fire light foreground), the opening shot(s), the starry sky transitioning to snow at the climax....) but wally did great and it's deserved.

Though I liked all the nominee's this year (and I agree with what the topic starter said about The King's Speech)......social network was the least showy but for it's one of the only films shot on RED that didn't scream "Ilook how shiney and digital I look!" to me. Very classy "just get the shot, don't show off, let the script and actors tell the story" camera work.

Melissa Leo seems insane, or drunk.

I believe we'll be hearing/seeing more of God of Love creator Luke Matheny in the future, seems the room loved him.

Boring show though, terrible hosting jobs.

One final thing that bothered me was how the spoiled many films in their clips. Like the climax of True Grit, and the speech in "the king's speech" (played over the best picture montage at the end...)

And about inception: I liked it, but I left the theater with my mind fully intact, un blown, though entertained.
Perhaps it was becuase all my friends who saw it before me went on about how it WILL blow my mind...so I expected more.
I did buy it on blu-ray, watched it two more times since then, liked it a bit less ....mostly because the snow scene seemed so long and typically shot when compared to the amazing hallway/hotel section. Still one of the - if not the - best "big budget summer blockbuster" movie I've seen since I can remember.

And special shout-out to John Hawkes for winter's bone's "teardrop". That character made the movie IMO, but I knew he wouldn't win. Bale gave a monster of a performance.
