American pay as you go sim card

Dear American friends

Can anyone recommend a 'pay as you go' type sim card, something that I could top up via paypal for the occasional US trip. I dont want a contract or a monthly allowance and the costs incurred using my European provider are eye watering. I can burn thru $30 in 30 min just for checking email never mind making a call.

I often meet my European friends and colleagues at IAD (Dulles International Airport near Washington DC). One of the first things they do is buying SIM cards at vending machines - they take all credit cards. One of them is right in front of international arrivals. I'd assume that other international airports have same arrangements.
