American Movies look like Informercials

Ok, I'm one week into a two week trip to Europe. (Both for fun and for work.) And I have watched a couple of American Movies using their DVD's on their DVD players, with their TV's - and they all look different. They look like they are informercials, or that they have been shot on green screen. The feeling of the movie is completely off. I try to get into it, but the visual look keeps distracting me. I asked my wife if she noticed anything about the movies, and she did as well, but it was not a big distraction for her.

Anyway, my question is this- What is going on? I have seen these movies before in America, and I know that they did not have the same feeling to them. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and can explain this to me?

Yup, I noticed the same thing while watching Hogan's Heroes while in Germany. And ya know... that's a really odd concept: Germans watching an old American sitcom (dubbed in their language) that mocks them.

Of course, I don't speak German, so maybe they changed the lines to where the Germans look smarter.

Thanks, I should have figured that - but who would have thought that it made that much of a difference. It is funny to see all of the americanisms here. When I was in Germany we would be walking down the street and a car would pass by with loud american rap playing. Made me smile.

I was in Paris two yrs ago with my wife and we watched movies (not prono :( ) before we went to sleep and they looked horrible.
I couldn't figure out why, I just thought the French did it on purpose because they hate us.

Wasn't me. I've got "Here Come The Warm Jets", "Another Green World", "Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)", and "The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" in the CD player today.

Yesterday was "American Beauty", "Merrily We Dance And Sing", and "Seducing Down The Door (vol 1 & 2)."

Guys, you remind me of this guy in high school back in 1990.
He had heard that I'm from Germany so he walked up to me and started to ask me a couple of things like "you do have frigerators over in Germany, right?"
(no way, dude. We build those Mercedes and BMW and Porsches, but we shure have never seen a fridge before...!)

Think of it this way: We do have MTV. We do have the Simpsons.
So we know about 84% of the American culture.

But it's all negated by Rudi Karell. :engel017:

We don't hate you !! ;o)

I think today french people have some problems with the london victory (some at least) but nothing more !!

Our president is really a f.....g jerk...

In 2 weeks, it will be forgotten.

to be honest, It could be better if you do something for the earth by signing the kyoto protocol, for example.
Here in E.U, factories have to pay to be allowed to emit (oxyd carbon). Not the best solution but certainly a way to switch to another technologies.

We are all living on the same planet.

To come back to topic :

French people are at least as lazy as everybody and they don't like subtitles and prefer dubbed version...

you shouldve just slaped him. lol nah... but if you were serious about knowing Us culture through tv.. i just wanted to point out that MTV and simpsons and all that other TV garbage dosent really acurately reperesent US culture. its a skewed or twisted and grossly eggagerated view of reality which is why its entertaining.. even to us. if it was normal life it wouldnt be entertainment here in the US. i spent a summer in germany years ago and i have to say its a beautiful place. but one thing i quickly realized that what US TV paints germany to be is not an accurate representation of the reality. anyway .. you probably werent serious about that anyway.

I agree. I visited with some of my wife's family in Holland for a couple of days and it was interesting to here about some of their perceprions of us Americans. Most of which were pretty accurate. One of which was not, was that what was shown on Jerry Springer represented the average joe american. I assured them that those people were the freaks of our culture, not the norm.

Anyway, I loved Germany, and thought about looking some of you up (Those of you DVXers in Germany) but my schedule did not permit it. Maybe next time. I will definately be back, and depending on how crazy things get over here, possibly move out your direction ...
