AMD or Intel

I'm looking to buy a new workstation that I will be using Premeire Pro 1.5 on and I can't decide between a 3Ghz P4 or a New AMD 64 3200+. Which one will be faster now and down the road a few months? What chip do you guys recommend?

Re: AMD or Intel

I have a AMD XP processor and my brother and my dad (and ALL computers at my work) runt p4's. My processor is actually considerably "lower" in speed on the package, but is EXTREMELY much much faster than all of the p4's in reality. My processor blows them out of the water. Its funny cause they call me and brag about what they got and we both time different things over the phone and mine is always a few seconds faster/ I dont know why, but the AMD XP chips were made FOR XP. So, I would buy another AMD without a second thought.

Re: AMD or Intel

I have an AMD 1800+ on XP which had 1.25GB of ram (512 of the ram died, thats another story) with a GF4Ti4200 128ram and all ran pretty much fine.

I am however moving from that machine to a new machine which has an Intel 3Ghz and 1Gb ram with XP and a Radeon 9600.

I have used this machine b4 and to be honest I couldnt tell the difference.

I want a G5 :P

Re: AMD or Intel

AMD is cheaper. and AMD demands a stronger powerdevice (450W). then it is just as good or as many say better than Intel.
my next machine will be a dualAMD for the price of a single P4 and i will shoot any itel in the same pricerange out of the water.....

Re: AMD or Intel

I use an AMD XP 3000+ with 1GB Memory and I can do just about anything on my PC. I edit video, sound and special effects with no problem.

Re: AMD or Intel

I have two PC with P4 3.0 hyperthreding, 1 GB Ram, 1 80 GB to program and 2x120 GB RAID and they works find

Re: AMD or Intel

buy an apple.
if you dont, get the fastest 64 bit amd card, theyre on par with the fastest intel and next-gen hardware for 64 bit technology

Re: AMD or Intel

I run Vegas 5 on: dual AMD MP2800, AMD Opetron 848 Dual, Xenon Dual 3Ghz, all with 2 Gbt ram.Video GForce 4 Quad 128.
With Windows XP Pro, AMD dual MP2800 preform better, next Xenon and Opetron in last place. After new update for XP, to support AMD 64 processors, AMD Opetron should be fastest.

Re: AMD or Intel

MAC, i thought they were out of business with all the junk they sell. Ahh...soon enough

Re: AMD or Intel

im surprised at all the AMD recomendations. AMD and Intel procesors are almost identical in price now... in the testing of the 64 bit chips, they dont show much improvement over 32bit yet... and probably by the time 64bit does get popular, the chips of today are most likely not going to show huge advantage. Anandtech, Tomshardware, etc. all show Intel on top of the benchmarks for video editing. I've got an AMD right now (and was very happy for the past 3 years) but am definately going intel when i upgrade next month.

Re: AMD or Intel

I was in your boat last month Dan.. I have been a loyal AMD guy for the last 10 years, since the old K2 66mhz (boy when I got the 100mhz chip I thought I would never need that speed heh heh)

Anyways, I finally switched to Intel last month with a 3.2 HyperT P4.. from a 3000mhz AMD. To be honest, cant tell the difference, the only thing I find is that the mobos for p4's seem to have alot more features.

Re: AMD or Intel

It always gets me when people simply compare CPU's (AMD or Intel) as system metrics. They are both quality products and I have used both extensively. However, the most important thing to consider if you're building a new machine (especially for video editing) is the supporting hardware. I personally think that Intel chips with Intel chipsets outperform AMD in many cases - but only if the surrounding hardware can keep up. You need a good motherboard with a fast FSB, dual-channel memory, SCSI or SATA support, etc. Quality low latency memory, fast HD's, high-end video cards, stable power supplies, etc - this all makes a HUGE difference on system performance overall. So the question is not just AMD or Intel. Pick a budget, and then distribute it to all your components - this will give you a fast system. (Mac's included - the new G5's seem impressive)

FYI - i'm running Vegas on a dual Intel Xeon 2.8G system with 2x 512MB RAM, 2x120GB SATA HD, and a Geforce 5600 attached to dual 17" LCD's - it ROCKS)
