AMD 64X2 or Aspect HD?

Hi Gang,

I'm planning to buy a new pc to edit HDV footage from my FX1E on Premiere Pro 1.5 and I was wondering if it is really worth it to buy an AMD 64 dual...or should I buy a cheaper pc (say an AMD 64 single) and use Cineforms' Aspect HD?

Cheers,

Rafa

Hey Rafa,
Since no one as responded, I throw in my 2 cents. Since you're editing HDV, Aspect HD does sound like a good alternative to dual core. They claim 4 times the performance of editing HDV straight with PPro. However, are there other CPU-intensive applications that you run that would benefit from having a dual core?

Intel CPU's have always worked a little better with PPro.

Faster, not necessarily better. About the 30'th time I lost my work on an Intel machine, I started lusting after the rock solid nature of AMD cpu's.

As for faster CPU vs. Aspect HD, I would vote faster CPU. Because that way, it doesn't matter what you're working on, your computer will run faster.

Then later, if you want to ADD Aspect HD, you can. It's a little harder to add a second core to your processor....

Actually my 2.8HT P4 system has been a little more stable then my AMD X2 4400+. There is a DV capture bug with the AMD if you run both cores with PPro - you have to disable one of the logical cores in task manager otherwise you get a recorder error in PPro. Sometimes when you render out to WMVHD from PPro, the timeline becomes very slow and you have to reboot the machine (cant just quit premiere and reload it). This also sometimes occurs with certain plugins. But, the speed cant be beat. The P4 runs with the Matrox .x100 card and the AMD runs with a Parhelia AVPe - very functional setups. Hopefully PPro 2.0 will handle the AMD better.

Hopefully yes, I'm sick of the NLE companies supporting suggesting (and testing) Intel processors only while being aware of a higher level of architecture like AMD's

It's been a sick tradition for years now and hopefully this year it will be AMD'S best, AVID has an AMD Opteron (HP) Dual Core Workstation certified ,Canopus' NX pci-express board also supports dual core AMD's and with Premiere Pro 2.0 coming out, things could not look better. :)

I'm also looking at new computers and want an AMD chip, with PPro 2 and Windows 64 on the horizon, I might hold off for another few months and see what things look like.

Presently I run Aspect HD at work, and can say it's a pretty decent program. It basically does what in my oppinion PPro 1.5 should be able to do on its own, which makes it hard to swallow the price for AHD, but i guess thats just how it goes.
