At CES 2013 Ambarella introduced a high speed consumer camera system with high dynamic range. This system is available today and all that is needed is to figure out a way to fit the electronics inside the camera body.

Unfortunately the Go-Pro 4k maxes out at 15 frames per second which is barely usable, has a 3K 30 fps mode which is not a recognized standard and its 1080p mode maxes out at 60 fps which most consumer cameras already support.

This new ambarella chip is exciting because it supports 4K cinema at 30fps and 1080p at 120 fps which makes it ideal for the fast action sports. The promise of high dynamic range means that there is the possibility that a consumer can purchase a camera that mimics the quality of a professional camera.

I hope camera makers will come to the realization that the best way to protect the high end is to sell millions of high quality cameras that consumers can afford.

AFAIK, Ambarella doesn't make cameras, they make processors that basically take the data out of the sensor, encode it, and save it to file. And they don't make sensors, so I don't know how they can talk about dynamic range.

edit: sorry, you said "camera system". So yes, that would be a processor.

You do know that the GoPro is a shipping product based on the previous-generation Ambarella chip, right?

I'm sure there will be a new GoPro based on the new Ambarella chip at some point this year...

If they can fit this in a GoPro, why not put is a camera big enough to hold and see the controls of?
