As far as I can tell he is playing the guitar, he's only playing the first string if you watch his fingers, which is what you hear. I don't think there's any hokey pokey going on here.
As for why he's fingering out the chords on his left hand and only playing the first string on his right hand is anyones guess.

At any rate, the kid has more talent than anything I've ever seen on those talent shows. I mean, heck, that's obvious.

//And...he does make a hellofuh lot of mistakes. Singing I think he's okay with, but maybe he's a bit early yet on the guitar end of it. :)
Time should take care of that though. :)

I'm surprised anyone would think the video is fake. I guess I have to consider that I posted this on a video-related forum where we've all seen a few fakes over the years. As Gord pointed out, the style of his bass line plucking along with the 100% perfect synch - even on the mistakes - proves it enough for me to believe its real.
