Altmans

 I've read the links and talked to my sensei. I still don't get it. What's wrong with Altmans that I should spend that much more on Arri's or Moles. I'm talking Fresnel's. I figure I have time to think about it since B and H is on vacation.

Arris and Moles are really well made and if you want to use them for the long haul, well worth their prices. I have purchased very old Moles that while not the prettiest, still work as well as they did the day that they were made.

The last time we went through this, the question came down to whether you want a theatrical fixture, suited to a permanent install:

or a motion picture style fixture, suited to work in the field, with set, operate and strike on a constant basis:

There are big differences (least of which is price) between these fixtures. Do a search for the discussion on Altman fresnels from a couple weeks ago.

I did already. I read the whole thing and then checked some other links. Mostly what I got out of the discussion was that altmans are hotter and and don't last as long. There was some mention of the light they put out and i did go to their websites to do some comparisons. Based on that criteria, mole appears to be the best. Still I've got to wonder if it is really worth paying so much more?

It depends on your application. If you are looking to only shoot two or three projects with these lights then go ahead and save some money on Altmans (or you could save even more and go Smith Victor). However if you are looking to shoot lots of projects and do a lot of location shooting Mole is really worth the extra money.

Think of it this way, if you were going to rent lights for your projects almost every rental house you go to will have Moles. They are dependable and last forever. If you really want to save some cash go with Lowell.

Thanks for your input. I do want the lights to last but it seemed to me that the various opinions were inconclusive. Yours is the best answer yet.
