I'm having a difficult time finding a Bogen 501 head, and the 501HDV hasn't exactly gotten favorable reviews, any suggestions on alternatives?

I've had both and needed more. The 510 is what I got and have really loved it for the price. Second hand for less than $250. It will take up to 8.5 kg or 10.5 kg (2 models) has 3 levels of resistance. I'd love a Sachtler but I just can't find that much money.

I have it and it is just fine for my dvx. It pans and tilts fine and is crazy light weight, so like is there was a tripod for run and gun productions this is it.

How is the 501HDV vs 501 in your opinion? I'm beginning to question whether I should just buy a 501HDV. Is it really that bad?

I have the 501HDV but have not used the older 501. I use it on Miller Solo DV Carbon Fiber sticks (75mm bowl) and on a Manfrotto 528XB (100mm) that weighs a ton (I bought it for my Camera Turret Jib). If you order a head, make sure you get a 75mm bowl adapter to work with your tripod.

For the money, it works fine. However, do not expect it to do ultra smooth pan / tilts, but with a little practice you can get some just acceptable shots. If I'm doing a P/T I expect that the cut will be "moving" throught the clip, because when you start the move it will jerk ever so slightly. I've tried the rubber band trick, lots of practice, you name it. It just isn't a $2500 head. And don't even bother with a compound P/T move. Doing both at the same time wll result in seasickness for your viewer.

With that, it is a great head for locking down when I'm dragging the HVX and Miller around to get stock shots. Very light weight, rugged, easy to level, and locks down easily. It has its place in the world. Just don't expect more than $175 can deliver.

i have the regular 501 Head & i use it for a JVC HD110 and it works fine. I also have a friend who has the 501hdv for his HVX and it works just fine.

thekreative, I'm curious re. the 510 head. I'm getting one offered for a good price but wonder if it could be too big for my EX1....? Is it adjustable enough to deal with a lighter weight camera?
Insights appreciated, best, karl
