Alternative to the Schoeps MK41

After debating with myself on which Hyper cardoid to get I have decided on the AKG C480B - Power Module and the CK63-ULS (Hyper-Cardioid Microphone Capsule). I also have the option to add the CK69 (Dual Hyper-Cardioid/Directional Shotgun Interchangeable Microphone Capsules) I also plan on purchasing the Rycote 5cm Medium Hole Softie / Mount and Boom Adapter. This will give me good wind and sound protection for the CK63 – BUT I don’t think it will work on the CK69. B& H web sit mentions windscreens come with the capsules (CK69) – but I assume they are the inexpensive foam and I have not had very good luck in windy situations with those. And final I would like to be able to mount this to the DVX occasionally So - I plan to use the
Beyerdynamic EA86 - Camera Shoe Shock Mount for this –I feel that this mic is the way to go if you don’t already have a large kit. Is there anything else I should consider before making this purchase, or maybe you have a suggestion for windprtection for the long (12.5 inches) shotgun capsule (CK69. Thanks.

Re: Alternative to the Schoeps MK41

I have everything you just listed above except for the Beyer shock mount. I'd be surprised if anything "less then beefy" would support the ck69/long. Even in a Rycote Softie boot it wants to hang down and I have to compensate with the angle. Also regarding the foam screens? Yeah, they are the thin i.e. worthless for outdoors wind... type. I got the long softie for mine and it's like trying to put a wool sweater on an anaconda. It seriously only takes about a minute, but that's a lot of substance on a mic.

Overall I'm really happy with both the ck63 and ck69. I don't think these mics get a fair consideration in the mic wars. Maybe I won't ever outgrow "the fever", but I've tried a bunch of mics and the AKG's are satisfying my taste for now. I'm actually really satisfied with them... maybe they aren't as exciting as some of the other options... perhaps it's the LACK of hype... but when I'm really trying to listen critically, I think they're up there with the best mics you can get.

If you bite the bullet you'll have to let me know what you think.

Thanks Matt for your response,
I will let you know.
Did you figure out a way to wind protect and support the ck69/long?

Re: Alternative to the Schoeps MK41

I had to go with a softie... and I have it mounted in a Softie boot which must be angled up a bit to support the added weight from the length... fortunately the ck69 cap isn't much heavier then the 480b pre/ps so it doesn't balance THAT bad... but you do have to compensate for weight once the softie is on. Is it the best solution? No. Does it work adequately? Yeah...

Re: Alternative to the Schoeps MK41

I have the AKG Blue Line system. SE300B with CK93 & CK98. Hyper sounds excellent, wish the short gun had more reach but then doesn't everybody? It sounds great also.

Re: Alternative to the Schoeps MK41

I like those a lot too... I'm more of a fan of the hyper then the shotgun... but I push people to the Blue Line over the Sennheiser "me" line all the time. If somebody is hell-bent on getting a modular system then I think the AKG Blue Line gives you some professional options at a great price... rather then consumer options at a professional's price.

That very hyper was used in Pearl Harbor and Bad Boys II.

One of the things that I like about the 300 over the 480 is that you have that "active cable" option... That is seriously cool and worth the high price. The best we can do with our 480s is to get the swivel... I wish AKG had an active cable for the ULS line...
