Alternative to P2 Cards

The ability to show the client... the talent... the director the footage the moment after you've shot it.. and to check out previous clips without worrying of rewinding and recording over something valuable is PRICELESS.

The post side is awesome.. but the production side is even better. Besides, even over time tape adds up especially if you are using the HD DV tapes. Now I've probably shot over a 500 hours of p2 cards over the year plus.... even at 4 bucks a piece, that's 2k in tape stock that I would have bought... and the HD tapes, would make it about 10k or so...

It's all in what you want and where you'll put your emphasis. I'm working a gig now where the wild run and gun stuff is being shot with the A1.. That's better suited for shooting tons and tons of stuff, but doesn't quite hold up against the HVX for more controlled and cinematic types of shooting.. Still really like the A1 and I might have to pick one up at somepoint...

I'm just also hoping to have enough of a break to read the posts I've been missing on here.. Being busy sucks.

On average it takes 2-3 hours to properly log and capture a 1 hour tape depending on the number of cuts. It takes 10 minutes on a p2 card. You can figure that your editing machine will be tied up for 2-3 hours for this process, and that is time you could be billing your client 50-200 bucks per hour for your editing time, and also taking more jobs.

This is why some people keep their old computers. Capture on that, edit with the new one in the same time. I wonder how many P2 cards I could buy if I sell off my old G4. But it captures with the same speed as the newest macpro...as the capture speed is solely related to the tape speed. Then you have the same files and transfer anywhere.

I still dont feel like loving the idea of being ripped off by Pana oldish PCMCIA solution. Let alone the difficulties of HVX on the move.
