Alternative recording device?

I wanted to know if I did not want to use the dvx100 as a recording device, could I firewire my canon zr60 and record on it to still get the same quality? :-/

The reason I am asking is because I want the dvx100 to last. I know It is kind of wired but I paid a lot for it and I am out of money to fix the heads if they go out.:'(

Another reason is I just filmed a short with some friends and they all liked to see the scene that was just shot. So I would show them the footage but I would have to rewind it.

I am just seeing if this is a good solution or a waste of time.:-/

Re: Alternative recording device?

Yes you could do exactly that. It's a little cumbersome but it would work. You could also record on both devices at the same time to give you the ultimate in protection against dropouts.

Re: Alternative recording device?

Thanks for the response barry. ;D I just thought it would be a good idea :D

Re: Alternative recording device?

I'm using a laptop PC to record the footage directly to hard drive (internal and external USB 2.0 or firewire), which also gives you a 15" HD monitor for instant review. As he mentioned, it is more cumbersome, and doesn't really work for moving shots, but for a fixed camera shot it's great.

Re: Alternative recording device?

Man, the head is not going to wear just like that.
You are even worse than me. I don't use the camera neither to rewind nor to play. No way!!! It is the precious!!!

But I do use it to record, though.

Anyway, all the best

Fidel.

Ya, i know it wont wear right away but i thought i would see what all ya had to say. :D

so thanks for all the comments. ;D

Re: Alternative recording device?

anyone tried to record to MJPEG straight out of the S-Video plug?
then the image would not be compressed to DV but could be saved uncompressed. you have to carry a shitload of harddisks with you, but it could be a far superior image.....

Re: Alternative recording device?

Good thinking, but it's not going to work. The compression to DV happens before the image hits the s-video port, IIRC.

The image would be compressed to DV, uncompressed, transcoded from component to Y/C (meaning the chroma channels are irretrievably blended together), sent out an S-video port, and then re-captured and recompressed in M-JPEG.

No, that's not gonna look better than straight DV...

Re: Alternative recording device?

when recording, does the heads of the dvx record better than a consumer camera? :-/
