Alright.  I need help.

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
I know this is sooooooo basic and I will be stoned. I am having trouble with Vegas already. I want to isolate and add an effect to a portion of a video.

When I add a plug-in effect it adds the effect to the whole video and not the area I want. I've tried adding keyframes but, what the hell...

Can someone give me a basic run-down on how to isolate a portion of the video you want to alter, whether it be fades, effects, titles or whatevr?

Please! :-/ :'(

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

..you need to use the splicing/cutting tool to cut out the section you want affected making it a seperate little clip in the timeline(it doesnt actually do this to the actual video). and then apply the effect to that little clip you cut out

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

DO I USE THE selEction bar to highlight the area I want to "change" and then select sciccors to cut?!!!

Help me IAL! Youre my only hope!

Re: Alright.  I need help.

i dont use vegas(only tried the demo), but just save your project so that you can revert to your last saved file if im wrong. but just take the scissors, and cut the clip where you want the clip to start, and cut again where you want it to end, then you should have a little clip that you can manipulate sperately from the rest of the clip. again this doesnt affect your actual scource clip.  it just tells the program to take that start and end point of the scource clip, and treat it like a seperate clip. in adobe premiere (pro)which is what i use, its a razor blade tool. that does this for you.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Aggghhh

I did that and it literally cut the selected area out of the Video. I am so freaking out. Damn I hate not knowing something.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

..lol you saved it right.. guess its not the scossors..find the razor tool. .. that should do what your trying to do.  otherwise you could click in the blank space, and hit paste. if you cut the section out, you can just paste it in as a seperate section... you could also just hit control +z to undo anything you didnt mean to do. thats the nice thing about nles, is that you can try anything you want, and then just undo it if you dont like it.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

John, if you highlight a portion -- creat a loop -- and hit the scissors, you'll delete the area highlighted.  Instead, put your cursor line on the frame which you want to be the first frame of the clip, then hit "S".  You should then have split the clip, and the clip to the right of your cursor line should begin with the frame you have highlighted.

At the other end, put the cursor line on the frame AFTER you want to be the last frame of your subclip, and again hit "S." You should then have isolated your subclip.

Remember, though, if there IS an effect you want to apply to the whole video, like cropping, do that BEFORE you hit "S."

Re: Alright.  I need help.

This, of course, gets more complex the more layers and tracks you add . . .

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

is there a razor tool for that .. or do yu always have to hit s?

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

There's "split clip" in the edit menu; that *is* the razor tool. S is the shortcut.

At least it works the same as the razor tool in Edition. I haven't used Premiere much.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

i thought i remembered there being a tool, but couldn't remember what it was called. sorry for the extra headache john :).

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Alright, Ive calmed down a bit. Let me get this straight.

Whenever I want to "DO ANYTHING" to footage, scenes, frames I must highlight the are with the 'sliders' and then I "create an event" ?

Is that right?

I'm getting confused with EVENTS, ENVELOPES and PAN/CROP

Anyway, its getting better, but iwas going into meltdown!

Re: Alright.  I need help.

John,

Vegas is different. It's better than everything else, but it's different, and it takes some getting used to.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do would be to order either Gary Kleiner's 2-DVD training collection, or Douglas Spotted Eagle's 4-DVD collection. Trying to use Vegas without getting proper training will be an exercise in frustration. Even when you start getting it down and think you're learning it, I guarantee it'll be like taxi-ing a 747. You'll think you're all hot stuff, and some day someone will come along and point out "hey, you know this thing can also fly?"

LOL

I think you are right Barry. I self taught myself to use Photoshop (which isnt saying much) and still to this day learn new things.

I am doing a search right now for the two products you listed. I want to make and create films and not spend my hours and days killing myself!

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Barry, do you think the DVDs are a $100 value-add over Spotted Eagle's book?

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Tks Jubal!

I too am wondering which is best suited and where you might reccomend buying.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

I don't have Spot's DVD's, I have Gary's. Pat has Spot's, and soon we'll get around to swapping so we can both see both.

From what I understand of Spot's, there's really not anything on the DVD's that isn't in the book. However, it's a different way of learning -- if you learn by reading, the book is phenomenal. If you learn by seeing it done, the DVD's can be great.

I found Gary's DVD's excellent. They start out very basically -- a total beginner could start with these discs and learn the program. I'd been using Vegas for half a year or so, so I thought "well, this was a waste" and then bam -- there was a whole bunch of stuff I never knew how to do. For me, for $48 or whatever, that was well worth it.

At some point you have to figure out what your time is worth. Learning how to use the tool efficiently could save you hours and hours and hours every month -- to me that's well worth the cost of a $50 set of tapes or a $35 book. The program is just utterly amazing in what it can do, and I'm still discovering new things. I'm gonna have to go through those DVD's again to see what all I can pick up this next time through.

Re: Alright.  I need help.

Thanks Barry. I think I'll be ordering the DVD's by Gary (start with the 2 disc version first)
